Rory McIlroy Needs Break ‘Mentally,’ Heading Back to ‘My Neck of the Woods’

Rory McIlroy is looking for peace abroad, following some turbulent and disputed months back in America.

36-year-old McIlroy is planning a two-week break following his tied-sixth finish at the Travelers Championship held in Cromwell, Connecticut, during the weekend.

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but resonate with McIlroy’s sentiments when he shared that taking a short breather and returning to the familiar landscapes of the U.K. is not just a good idea, but something that seems essential for his mental wellbeing. He voiced these thoughts after wrapping up his final round on June 22.

McIlroy, along with his wife Erica Stoll, is presently constructing a grand residence in England. This pair, who are blessed with a 4-year-old daughter named Poppy, intend to divide their time between this new abode in the U.K. and their house in Florida.

McIlroy expressed his enthusiasm and mentioned he might not have had enough downtime following the events in April (his first Masters win). He’s looking forward to using the upcoming fortnight for some rest and reflection. So, he’s excited about that.

1st place finish at the Masters Tournament signified the initial triumph for McIlroy, joining an exclusive group of six golfers who have completed the career grand slam by winning all four major championships.

In the last six tournaments he’s participated in, the Irish golfer has yet to place within the top five.

Following his recent tie for 19th position at the U.S. Open held at Oakmont Country Club, McIlroy openly acknowledged that since his victory at the Masters, he’s been juggling various aspects of his life.

Speaking to reporters following my last round, I expressed that my existence seems to encompass two distinct realms. Off the course, I’m a devoted father and husband; yet, on this side, I embody another version of myself. It’s always refreshing to step away and reconnect with a semblance of normalcy.

Despite his impressive performance, McIlroy’s actions have drawn significant criticism from both golf enthusiasts and industry experts. For instance, at the U.S. Open, he was caught damaging a tee marker and throwing his club along the fairway.

On specific instances, McIlroy often chooses not to engage with the media, prompting golf legend Paul McGinley to ponder over McIlroy’s mental state.

McGinley stated after the U.S. Open, as reported by GOLF.com, “He seems exhausted to me.” It appeared as though he’s had enough of everything. Perhaps it was an emotional outburst due to his career experiences, I’m not sure. But he doesn’t seem like his usual self. This isn’t typical behavior.

McIlroy is set to make his comeback at the Genesis Scottish Open, happening at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, starting from July 10th.
