If you were a child during the late 90s and early 2000s and owned a PlayStation, there’s a good possibility that you owned or played a game from the Tony Hawk series. While this author fondly remembers the first Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, it is equally likely that others started their journey with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 on the PlayStation 2.
No matter where you performed your initial virtual kickflip, it’s likely that this series evokes cherished memories for you. So, it’s natural that you might be curious about the quality of the remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4.
Well, the first ratings are in, so let’s break it all down:
Game Informer – 8/10
Back in the day, the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series significantly impacted my musical preferences, personal style, and more, all while providing me with countless hours of enjoyable entertainment on my PlayStation 2. If they were to release a remake now, it would have a similar effect or at least remind me of why these games left such a lasting impression when I was young. Although Iron Galaxy has expertly updated the gameplay and graphics of these classics to fit modern standards in 2025, I feel that they could have done a better job showcasing the impact these games had during their peak popularity.
IGN – 8/10
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4, released together, are an impressive revival of the beloved originals from 2001 and 2002, offering another delightful trip down memory lane to the golden era of early 2000s gaming – a time before microtransactions and battle passes took over. Just like 2020’s 1 + 2, THPS 3 + 4 once again demonstrates that the series’ high-flying skateboarding formula remains evergreen, catering to players of all skill levels; it may seem straightforward at first glance, but beneath the surface lies a depth that challenges those who dare to push their combos to impressive heights. However, some fans might find issue with THPS4 being synced with the classic two-minute timer from the initial trilogy, as they hold the series’ fourth installment in high esteem. Moreover, removing 80% of the original soundtracks for THPS3 and THPS4 feels surprisingly hasty given their significance to those games. Without T.N.T.? I’d be ready to explode!
GameSpot – 8/10
The remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 is an impressive skateboarding game, but some questionable decisions about the Career mode and THPS 4 levels cause concern among fans. Some alterations seem unnecessary, and the fourth game doesn’t seamlessly blend with the original three games as expected. It’s unfortunate that new players won’t get to play the fourth game in its intended form. However, once the initial disappointment subsides, you’re left with a remake that handles just as well as ever, which makes it an enjoyable experience for any player.
