
It appears that the eagerly awaited horror game ROUTINE, which has been in development for some time, is moving towards a real launch. Recently, IGN posted a new video about the game, offering us a peek at what to expect from ROUTINE. The short clip provides insight into how its focus on stealth and horror will materialize, as well as a glimpse of the game’s setting, the functioning of its in-game technology, and the ways players can handle the dangers lurking in the darkness. In the beginning of the game, players are introduced to how the ROUTINE utilizes its in-game computer terminals, each featuring a unique user interface. Navigating this terminal allows players to enhance their core tools and gain insights into new gameplay features they can access. One such tool showcased in the trailer is the C.A.T., which appears to be capable of suppressing magnetic interference from neighboring machines. The C.A.T. also comes equipped with its own camera and screen. It’s important to mention that the C.A.T. primarily serves as a maintenance tool rather than a weapon in the game.
In the beginning of the video, a brief puzzle is solved using the C.A.T., leading the player into a dark corridor. Subsequently, they enter a room where a computer presents different paths to choose from. The puzzle design in the game ROUTINE appears to draw significantly from real-world computer programming, requiring players to decipher diagnostics and error codes displayed on various terminals, and ultimately fixing these issues by interpreting the meanings behind the codes.
In the concluding scenes, we get a glimpse into the covert terror experienced in the game ROUTINE. Here, the player must tread cautiously, moving from one room to another, and subsequently through a corridor, all while avoiding detection by what appear to be menacing robots.
For approximately a decade now, it appears that progress has been made on the project known as “ROUTINE”. This undertaking was initially unveiled in 2012, and since then, developer Lunar Software has intermittently emerged to share new trailers for their yet-to-be-released horror game. After a period of quiet work, they would resurface again. Recently, designers Aaron Foster and Jemma Hughes, along with programmer Pete Dissler, affirmed that development is still ongoing actively on the game.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that the creators behind this amazing title are often not too chatty about their work – and I totally get why! Being part of a small team, they’re likely focusing all their energy on refining the game itself, ensuring every detail is just right. They understand the need to walk the line between sharing updates and simply getting the job done.
The team has consistently found the task of working on the ROUTINE challenging due to our size, so we’ve been concentrating solely on completing it. However, we understand the curiosity about our project and apologize for any inconvenience or frustration this focus may have caused.
ROUTINE is being developed for PC and Xbox Series X/S, and is slated for release later this year.
