Nvidia is releasing a significant update to RTX Remix, its tool for modifying games. Called RTX Remix Logic, the update lets users create graphics effects that change based on what a player is doing or where they are in the game. Nvidia plans to roll out the update through the Nvidia app later this month.
The new Logic system in RTX Remix can utilize 900 graphics settings to change how a game looks based on what’s happening within the game. This feature will work with over 165 classic games. Nvidia says this is a significant advancement for modding older games, because traditionally, making a game react to events required access to the original game code or engine – something most modders don’t have.
Nvidia highlights that in the original Half-Life 2, weather effects like snow were limited to outdoor areas. RTX Remix initially made it snow everywhere, even inside buildings. However, a recent update called Logic allows players to control when and where the snow falls, preventing it from appearing indoors. This system supports over 30 different game events, meaning players can trigger effects based on things like the player’s viewpoint, object states, time of day, or even specific button presses.
Nvidia explained that with games like Half-Life 2 RTX, they can create effects where opening a door leads to a different version of the same area – in this case, a new, uniquely lit and weathered Ravenholm – each time it’s opened. Essentially, the door acts as a portal to a constantly changing environment.
Beyond improved graphics and more engaging in-game events, Logic allows developers to build entirely new gameplay features by connecting various game events. For instance, Nvidia demonstrated this using Half-Life 2, creating a “paranoia” effect that blurs the player’s vision to signal the presence of hidden enemies.
RTX Remix’s new Logic features are designed to be user-friendly – you don’t need any programming skills to use them. Instead of writing code, you can create and edit interactions using a visual, node-based interface. This allows you to connect different elements to create cause-and-effect relationships, which can then be adjusted to control over 900 different visual effects. The system is also built to be expanded, meaning the RTX Remix community can create and add their own custom features, like new ways to trigger events and actions within games.
RTX Remix launched in April 2023, originally working only with older PC games that used DirectX 8 or 9 graphics. Since then, Nvidia has gradually added support for more games to be modified with the tool.
