Eidos Montreal recently announced layoffs because a large project, which had been in development for several years, was cancelled. This update was posted on March 31st, 2026, at 3:45 PM.
According to Jason Schreier, a well-known and trustworthy source, the cancelled game was a completely new project that faced many difficulties during development. He shared these details in a Reddit post.
Considering Eidos Montreal’s past projects, it wasn’t unexpected that they were working on a new game. We can likely expect to learn more details about it soon.
Eidos Montreal, a well-established game developer, has announced it is laying off 124 employees. The studio’s head, David Anfossi, who has been with the company for many years, is also leaving.
The video game industry is facing tough times right now. We’re seeing frequent layoffs, increasing development costs, and disappointing sales figures, all while the price of necessary technology keeps going up.
Eidos Montreal has faced a difficult period in recent years. After being bought by Embracer Group from Square Enix in 2022, the studio hasn’t released a new game yet.
Over the past few years, several projects were cancelled, such as a new game in the Deus Ex series and a potential reboot of Soul Reaver. These cancellations have led to multiple rounds of layoffs at Eidos Montreal.
Last year, the studio reportedly tried to get funding for a new Deus Ex game, but publishers weren’t interested. As a result, the project never moved forward.
The company announced a workforce reduction affecting 124 employees due to shifts in project requirements, impacting both production and support teams.
And, because of Anfossi’s departure, the team is now having to restructure its leadership roles.
They are currently creating a plan to manage the change, and will share more information once the new leaders are appointed.
Honestly, things aren’t looking great for a studio that used to be a really big deal in gaming. It’s super sad to hear about the layoffs, and I really hope everyone affected lands on their feet.
