I just saw a post on LinkedIn that’s really sad – it looks like Wildlight Entertainment had to lay off most of their team. Apparently, it’s connected to how the launch of their game, Highguard, went – it didn’t quite get the reception they were hoping for. It’s tough to see, but hopefully everyone affected lands on their feet.
Highguard was only released a little over two weeks ago, making these reported layoffs surprisingly quick to happen.
It seems senior level designer Alex Graner was laid off earlier today, and he’s shared this information publicly.
Graner expressed disappointment, noting that the cancellation means fans won’t see content they—including him—had created for Highguard. He said it’s particularly upsetting because this content was never released.
It’s understandably devastating for people like Graner who dedicated themselves to the project, especially since it didn’t quite succeed in the end.
Highguard was originally shown at the very end of The Game Awards 2025. This wasn’t ideal, as anything revealed during Geoff Keighley’s show faces a lot of hype and expectation.
Despite some early excitement, the game Highguard launched as scheduled on January 28th, but quickly lost players – numbers dropped dramatically within just a few days.
Adding a 5v5 game mode briefly boosted the game’s popularity, but the effect didn’t last.
We expect an official announcement about the Highguard’s plans to be released shortly, and we will update this article as soon as it is available.
