There’s a lot of discussion right now about Sony’s plans for PC gaming. Some reports suggest they might stop releasing their biggest PlayStation games on computers and focus solely on the PlayStation 5.
According to Jason Schreier, a trusted source on the ResetEra forum, this change is likely happening.
I was listening to the Triple Click podcast, and the guest seemed to be saying that Sony isn’t planning to release their big, single-player games on PC anymore. It sounds like they’re shifting away from that strategy.
Schreier notes that Sony’s games haven’t performed very well on PC. This is supported by data like the number of players on Steam and Sony’s financial results, suggesting his assessment is correct.
Simply put, Sony hasn’t had much commercial success with releasing its games on platforms other than PlayStation. Recent reports show that sales from these ports only contribute a tiny 2% to the company’s overall revenue – a very small amount compared to their total earnings.
Basically, the company seems to be moving away from trying to release games on many different platforms. This shift might have happened sooner if their PC games had performed better. However, this change only affects their single-player games, not the ones that are constantly updated as a live service.
For months, there’s been talk that Sony is changing its plans. Last year, people familiar with the industry started suggesting a shift was possible.
Other reliable sources agree with the rumors, supporting what Schreier reported. John Linneman from Digital Foundry has heard the same information, and well-known insider NateTheHate states that Sony is definitely changing its strategy for releasing games on PC.
So, what are your thoughts? Does it make sense for Sony to focus on exclusive games, especially considering their PC single-player titles haven’t been hugely successful? Let us know what you think about bringing back exclusivity in the comments!
