Things haven’t been easy for fans of Lord of the Rings video games recently. The most recent games, like Return to Moria, Tales of the Shire, and especially Gollum, have generally received average to negative reviews.
If the stories circulating are accurate, the upcoming main game in the series could significantly improve things.
According to a report from Insider Gaming, a new Lord of the Rings game is currently being developed. Sources indicate this project has been underway for “some time,” which isn’t particularly shocking, but confirms ongoing work on a new title in the franchise.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that these sources suggest the game will be a third-person action adventure, and is partially intended to rival the success of Hogwarts Legacy, which was a huge hit commercially.
Sources say the game’s developers are discussing a potential investment from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. This investment could reportedly provide around $100 million to help fund the game’s development. However, the deal isn’t finalized yet, and currently, the project is being financed with the company’s own funds, according to a recent report.
Embracer Group owns the intellectual property for various video games, and a game development studio called Revenge is reportedly working on some of them. Both Embracer and Revenge have refused to provide any comments regarding this information.
Video game adaptations of The Lord of the Rings have been inconsistent in the past, so it will be fascinating to see if this new game can recapture the interest of fans.
For now, we’re considering this just a rumour, but a new game in the series isn’t surprising. We expect to see one released sometime in the future.
