To counter potential higher costs of PS5 consoles in Europe, Sony might be considering a reduction in the size of the internal SSD that comes standard with each console.
Based on information from a leaker named Billbil-Kun, who shared details from Dealabs, it’s expected that the standard Digital Edition of the PS5 will feature 825GB of storage in its new Chassis E series, compared to the 1TB storage found in the original Chassis D model. Interestingly, the initial launch models of the PS5 in 2020 also came with 825GB of space as standard, but this was later upgraded to 1TB when the sleeker PS5 Slim version hit the market.
The source alleges that, concerning the digital version of the standard PS5 sold in Europe, they’ve opted for less storage to prevent another price increase following the console’s previous two price hikes since its launch.
This new model will reportedly be available from 13th September 2025.
Instead of prices decreasing and more budget-friendly versions being released over time as generations passed, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S generations buckled this trend by increasing their prices. This has been due to changes in the current market conditions and tariffs instated by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Recently, Sony has decided to raise the prices of all PS5 models by $50, citing the ongoing challenging economic climate as the reason. In simpler terms, Sony Vice President Isabelle Tomatis explained that due to the tough economic conditions many global businesses are facing, it was a hard choice to make, but they will be increasing the suggested retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S., effective from August 21st.
This new pricing strategy has raised concerns among third-party publishers, with Capcom executive Haruhiro Tsujimoto suggesting that the overall cost is hindering software sales. As Monster Hunter Rise (Wilds on PS5) is their primary platform, he contends that the price of the PS5 console, a PS Plus subscription, and the game itself is prohibitively expensive.
