Like several of Harlan Coben’s successful novels recently adapted for Netflix, “Run Away”—originally set in the US—has been reimagined as a suspenseful British story.
The new series, Run Away, begins with a gripping mystery: Simon Greene (James Nesbitt) frantically searches for his missing daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange), and his quest quickly leads him into a dark and perilous world.
As a film buff, I was hooked from the very beginning! The story immediately throws you into a whirlwind as we follow Simon’s desperate search for his daughter, all while it cleverly weaves in Elena Ravenscroft (played brilliantly by Ruth Jones) investigating another disappearance. It quickly makes you wonder – are these two mysteries actually linked?

The TV series Run Away was shot in Manchester and the surrounding areas of northwest England. The location proved ideal for the author and production crew.
As a big fan of Harlan Coben’s stuff, I’ve noticed a pattern – he often moves the location of his novels when they become Netflix series. His books are usually set in the US, but the TV shows are frequently filmed in the UK. He recently told Netflix’s Tudum that after filming so many shows there, he’s really come to appreciate the unique appeal and atmosphere of the UK.
The north of England is fantastic because it offers such a diverse range of landscapes and experiences. You’ll find a unique blend of the ordinary and the unusual in its towns and countryside.
Filming for the show took place in several locations, including Stockport, Liverpool, Saddleworth Moor, and Dukinfield. Early scenes, and scenes featuring a plant-based restaurant, were shot at Evelyn’s in the Northern Quarter, which Elena visits and observes the owner of.
Alfred Enoch, discussing filming the series, explained that they shot scenes in a police station located in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, specifically St Peter’s Square. It was a challenging shoot as it coincided with the Champions League semi-finals and a heatwave – with temperatures around 34 degrees – and everyone was out enjoying the weather, making it quite noisy even while they were filming inside.
Coben mentioned a nostalgic moment while filming in Liverpool’s Sefton Park. A scene involving police officers searching for someone was shot at the same location – a conservatory building – where he previously worked as a maître d’ with Tom Cullen and Sarah Solemani on his earlier Sky series, ‘The Five’. He enjoyed returning to the spot after so many years.
Minnie Driver shared that she was surprised by how beautiful Liverpool was, as it was her first time visiting the city and its Sefton Park. She admitted she hadn’t realized how lovely it would be.
I knew it was a historic port city, but I was surprised by how many stunning Georgian squares and buildings there were. The city’s architecture and design are incredible, especially with that large park right in the center. We filmed in one of these squares, which was intended to resemble the exterior of a similar square in London.
