Runs in Saros on PS5 Will Be Significantly Shorter Than Those in Returnal

Housemarque, the developers of Saros, are trying to create a game that’s easier to pick up and play than their previous title, Returnal, and also one that’s less overwhelming.

We’ve seen in early looks at the new roguelite shooter that each playthrough will be quicker than in previous versions.

Saros is designed to let you finish a world in around 20 to 30 minutes, which is about half the time it takes to complete one in Returnal.

I’ve noticed that runs in Saros feel a lot faster-paced than in other roguelites, and it’s not just me getting better! It seems like Housemarque intentionally designed it this way, making each run feel quick and snappy, regardless of how you play. It’s a really cool change!

As a player, one of the biggest things the design team focused on was making those long runs feel risky – you really don’t want to lose all that progress! But they also wanted to avoid that totally helpless feeling you get when you realize it’ll take hours to get back to where you were if you mess up. They wanted to balance danger with a sense of control, so it’s challenging but not frustrating.

There are other ways the game streamlines things for players.

Saros will offer several ways to save your progress, including multiple save slots, automatic saving, and the ability to pause your current playthrough. This makes it more convenient than Returnal, which initially didn’t allow players to save during a run – a frustrating issue for many, considering how lengthy those runs could be.

Plus, in Saros’ central area, you can quickly travel back to any environment you’ve already discovered, so you won’t have to repeat the entire journey from the beginning.

It’s one more way the game gives you more options and less friction.

You can start at the beginning to rebuild Arjun Devraj’s strength, collecting helpful items to prepare for tougher challenges ahead. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can jump straight into exploring later areas without doing all that initial preparation.
