For decades, a sequel to the award-winning film Gladiator was discussed, and some of the ideas considered for bringing back Russell Crowe as Maximus were quite unusual. While Crowe didn’t appear in the recently released Gladiator II, the filmmakers still connected his character to the new story. It’s revealed that Maximus was actually the father of Lucius, the young boy from the first film. This surprising connection has changed how some fans view Maximus, and Russell Crowe himself isn’t pleased with the decision.
Russell Crowe recently criticized the new Gladiator sequel in an interview with Triple J (as reported by Entertainment Weekly). He explained that he believes the film missed what made the original so good. Crowe stated that the success of the first Gladiator wasn’t due to its spectacle or action, but rather its strong moral center, and that those involved with the sequel didn’t seem to understand this.
He explained that maintaining the character’s integrity was a constant struggle during filming. The producers repeatedly proposed adding sexual scenes for Maximus, which he felt would undermine his strength and motivations. He questioned the logic of suggesting an affair while the character was devoted to his wife, calling the idea ‘crazy’ and a misrepresentation of the character’s values.
Russell Crowe Is Right About Gladiator II

The revelation about Lucius’s true father isn’t a complete surprise. The first Gladiator movie hinted at a past romance between Maximus and Lucilla, and their interactions clearly show they had a history before their lives diverged. Gladiator II likely expands on this idea, adding complexity to Maximus’s relationship with both Lucilla and Lucius. Maximus formed a close connection with Lucius in the original film, and the sequel seems designed to strengthen that bond, as Lucius essentially follows in his father’s footsteps throughout the story.
Fans of the movie Gladiator might find some details confusing. Early in the film, it’s established that Lucilla’s son, Lucius, is around eight years old, the same age as Maximus’s son. This strongly suggests Maximus and Lucilla were having an affair while Maximus was married and had a family of his own. This contradicts the strong moral character Russell Crowe described, changing how we see Maximus. Crowe recognized that Maximus was a good, humble leader devoted to his loved ones. The entire first movie centers on Maximus’s desire to avenge his wife and son, so the idea that he also fathered a child with another woman weakens that motivation somewhat.
Rather than taking a bold, new direction with Gladiator II—initial ideas even considered exploring the afterlife—the filmmakers seem to have followed the predictable path of most legacy sequels. These films usually try to connect the original story with new characters and appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences. While some, like Top Gun: Maverick, have been huge successes, this approach is risky. If the connections aren’t handled carefully, they can feel forced and don’t add much to the story.
The sequel to Gladiator didn’t need to make Maximus the biological father of Lucius. Their established, positive relationship in the first film was enough to drive Lucius’s story. Lucius could have been inspired by Maximus as a role model without being his son, and the emotional impact would have been just as strong. Making them family doesn’t really add anything meaningful to the story, and it would have been better to preserve Maximus’s strong moral character by not creating that connection.
