Russell T Davies, the head writer and producer of Doctor Who, has stepped down, and the BBC is now looking for someone new to take over the show.
The BBC confirmed today that this year’s Christmas special has been cancelled. Russell T Davies announced his departure from the show in a post on social media.
He announced his departure from Doctor Who, but expressed excitement for the show’s future, as the BBC has decided to open up production to outside companies.
Because we now have a clear plan for the future, we’ve decided to skip the Christmas special. We originally created it as a safety net when things were uncertain, but that’s no longer necessary.

Just to be clear, there was absolutely no script written for the next Doctor Who, and nobody – not a single actor – was ever considered for the role. I can say that with certainty.
“You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You’ll wait a lonnng time.”
I’m really eager to see what happens with the show next! I’m wondering if they’ll stick with the same music, keep the iconic blue police box, and maybe even bring back the Drahvin!
Everything is open and possible, which perfectly captures the spirit of Doctor Who – it’s thrilling, unexpected, and fresh! The future is arriving, and it’s going to be a wild ride!
Russell T Davies, who previously led the show from 2005 to 2010, returned in 2023. Ncuti Gatwa then became the fifteenth Doctor, continuing the adventures in space and time.

Ncuti Gatwa’s time as The Doctor concluded with a dramatic cliffhanger: he regenerated into the form of Rose Tyler, a previous companion portrayed by Billie Piper.
Before the recent announcement, the BBC, Russell T Davies, and Bad Wolf Productions had all expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming special. Davies previously claimed that BBC executives were incredibly impressed with the plot details he revealed – but he now says that the story was never actually developed into a script.
He made his announcement right after the BBC explained that canceling the Christmas episode wasn’t a decision they made easily.
To ensure the show continues for years to come and follows BBC guidelines, Doctor Who will be put up for bids this year, allowing different companies to compete to produce it, the BBC announced.
Doctor Who is still a key program for the BBC, and this agreement confirms the BBC’s ongoing dedication to the show, promising more episodes for viewers in the future.

The BBC, along with Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf, have decided to cancel the Doctor Who Christmas special that was previously planned, following careful thought.
We didn’t make this decision easily, and we know fans will be upset. However, to make sure the show has a strong future, we’ve decided to focus on creating a full new series instead of a single special episode. This will allow the show to return at its best when the time is right.
Bad Wolf Productions released a statement saying it’s been wonderful working with Russell T Davies on the show, and they feel lucky to have been involved.
Doctor Who has always been a beacon of hope, and I’ve been incredibly honored to lead the show for 26 episodes with the BBC and Disney+.
Thank you for being a part of this amazing adventure through Space and Time, and especially, thank you to all our wonderful fans! Let’s go, let’s go!
