Russia just added Stalker dev GSC to its no-no list of ‘undesirable organisations’, sobs that Stalker 2 promoted ‘Ukrainian narratives’ and ‘aggressive Russophobic content’

The developer of the Stalker game series, GSC Game World, has been labelled an “undesirable organisation” by the Russian government. This means Russia considers the studio a threat to its security and constitutional order, and individuals within Russia who support or associate with the company could face legal consequences.

GSC Game World is perhaps the most well-known of the many Ukrainian game development studios impacted by the 2022 Russian invasion. The company was forced to move its operations from Kyiv to Prague, and tragically lost a developer, Volodymyr Yezhov, in combat in December 2022. They’ve also faced ongoing propaganda and attacks from those opposed to Ukraine and former Russian fans.

As a big fan of GSC Game World, I was really surprised to learn they’ve been designated as an “undesirable organization” by the Russian government today. It’s especially strange because they’ve been incredibly supportive of Ukraine since the invasion. They raised a massive $800,000 for the Ukrainian military through a game sale and actively encouraged their fans to donate too! I honestly thought Russia would have come after them a long time ago, considering how openly they’ve supported Ukraine and how quick Russia is to label anyone they disagree with as an extremist. It just feels…late, and a little weird that it took this long.

The Prosecutor General’s Office has accused GSC of providing financial support to the Ukrainian military and of portraying Russia as an aggressor by sharing information that it claims damages Russia’s reputation.

Russia claims that GSC’s leaders gave $17 million to a fund supporting the Ukrainian military. However, I haven’t been able to verify this claim independently; the information currently comes solely from a statement by the Russian Prosecutor General.

The most questionable claim, however, is the Office’s description of Stalker 2. They state that the 2024 game promotes Ukrainian viewpoints and includes hostile anti-Russian material. Having played and reviewed the game myself, I don’t remember anything that struck me as aggressively anti-Russian. It’s possible the Prosecutor General is objecting to the removal of the Russian voiceover.
