The death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, at just 43 years old, deeply affected Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther. Despite only working together once on that Marvel film, they had become very close, and Coogler has said he doubted he could continue his career after losing Boseman. Surprisingly, Boseman’s passing ultimately became the inspiration for Coogler’s upcoming 2025 film, Sinners, which has already received a Golden Globe nomination.
At the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony where Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous star, Ryan Coogler shared a touching story. He showed a copper bracelet Boseman had given him after they finished filming Black Panther, and said:
I took him for granted. I figured he’d always be around.
Ryan Coogler and Chadwick Boseman had planned to work together on many future projects, starting with more stories for T’Challa beyond Black Panther, including his original ideas for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Coogler believed they would have plenty of time to collaborate as friends on both Marvel films and other projects. Tragically, Boseman passed away after a private five-year struggle with colon cancer, a battle known to very few people outside of his family.

Five years after that, Michael B. Jordan – a frequent collaborator with Ryan Coogler and Chadwick Boseman’s co-star in Black Panther – appeared in Coogler’s film Sinners. Coogler told The New York Times that Boseman’s death motivated him to finish the vampire movie quickly; it was released only fifteen months after initial reports about its development. As the writer and director explained:
I was worried about losing everything and not being able to connect with and thank the audience who’s been so supportive.
It’s easy to imagine a different reality where Chadwick Boseman got to finish filming Sinners with Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan. Perhaps, instead of being twins, Jordan and Coogler could have played brothers with separate births. However, that doesn’t mean I’d trade the actual film – it’s been highly praised, even receiving a perfect score in a review from TopMob. Still, it’s fascinating to think about all the projects Coogler and Boseman might have created together.
Following Chadwick Boseman’s death, his work continued to be celebrated with appearances in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, earning him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination, and as a version of Star-Lord T’Challa in the first season of What If… ?. Now, Sinners has received seven Golden Globe nominations, and the results will be revealed during the ceremony airing January 11th on CBS and Paramount+.
