While a direct sequel to Ryan Coogler’s Sinners isn’t likely in the near future, the story could continue in other forms. Sinners is unique because it offers a complete, original narrative in a movie world often filled with sequels and superhero films. Even with just one film, Sinners has established a detailed and promising world with plenty of possibilities for future stories.
Ryan Coogler made Sinners as a deliberate change of pace from big franchise films like Creed and Black Panther. He wanted to tell a more intimate, personal story without the pressure of building a larger cinematic universe. Because of this, a sequel to Sinners doesn’t seem likely anytime soon. Luckily, the world of Sinners can still expand through other mediums besides live-action movies.
Ryan Coogler Confirms A Sinners Comic Sequel Is Possible
Sinners Could Continue In Comic Book Form Sooner Than Expected
During an appearance on CBR’s Heroes Journey podcast, director Ryan Coogler discussed the future of his new film, Sinners. He revealed that he’s already had initial conversations about continuing the story, and is also exploring the possibility of adapting the Sinners universe into a comic book series. Coogler stated:
Many of the storyboard artists I collaborate with are big comic book fans. One of them, Louis Gonzales, mentioned someone had asked him if his work could be turned into a comic. Apparently, while reviewing his storyboards, someone wondered if there was a comic book version available. It’s definitely a question that’s come up before.
While Sinners probably won’t launch a huge franchise, it definitely has room for more stories. We could see a direct sequel with the current characters, a prequel about the twins during World War I, or even spin-offs centered around characters like Remmick or the Choctaw hunters – any of these would work well as either movies or comic books. Other franchises like Predator, Godzilla, Supernatural, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show have successfully expanded into the comic book world recently, proving the potential.
Sinners Is Perfect For A Multimedia Franchise
Sinners Seems Like The Kind Of Movie That’s Based On A Cult Comic
The film Sinners has a strong visual style and features flawed characters that strongly resemble those found in graphic novels like Sin City, Oldboy, or Snowpiercer. It feels as though it could be based on a comic book, and adapting it into one wouldn’t be a difficult task. It already feels like a cult comic adaptation.
Look, not every comic book has to be about saving the world. Honestly, some of the best ones are the ones that keep things small and relatable. I’ve always loved how graphic novels like Road to Perdition and A History of Violence feel like really well-made movies – contained stories with incredible tension and a gritty realism that rivals anything you’d see on the big screen. They prove you don’t need universe-level stakes to create something truly compelling.
The world and story of Sinners are so compelling and rich that the series lends itself well to expansion in other formats. It would be a natural fit for a high-quality live-action TV show, either as a sequel or prequel, exploring its dark, film-noir style and dreamlike imagery. Alternatively, an animated series for adults or a limited-run comic book series of six or twelve issues could achieve a similar effect.
