Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot has found its Mulder.
Following the huge success of his film Sinners, which set new records for ticket sales and awards, Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of a popular 1990s show made significant progress in February when Hulu began production. Danielle Deadwyler, known for her role in The Woman in the Yard, was cast as one of the main characters in the pilot episode of The X-Files, which Coogler wrote and directed.
Himesh Patel, known from movies like Tenet, Yesterday, and Don’t Look Up, will star alongside Danielle Deadwyler in the upcoming X-Files reboot on Hulu. While details about the new series are still under wraps, it has been confirmed that both actors will be playing original characters.
What Himesh Patel’s Casting Means For The X-Files Reboot
This project brings together Patel and Deadwyler, who previously collaborated on the popular HBO miniseries Station Eleven. Patel earned an Emmy nomination for his work on that post-apocalyptic drama. He first gained recognition as Tamar Masood on the British soap opera EastEnders, appearing in over 500 episodes.
Himesh Patel is well-known for his leading role in the film Yesterday, directed by Danny Boyle, and for playing Mahir in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. He’s working with Nolan again on the upcoming film The Odyssey as Eurylochus. You can currently see him starring alongside Riz Ahmed in Bait, a comedy series on Prime Video that’s reminiscent of James Bond films.
| Himesh Patel’s Notable Movie & Television Roles | |
|---|---|
| Project | Patel’s Character |
| Yesterday (2019) | Jack Malik |
| Tenet (2020) | Mahir |
| Don’t Look Up (2021) | Phillip Kaj |
| Station Eleven (2021-2022) | Jeevan Chaudhary |
Details about the story are still secret. However, the new X-Files series will center around two accomplished, yet very different, FBI agents who develop a surprising connection while investigating unexplained cases in a previously inactive division. If the show is made, it will be a great opportunity to showcase two talented actors known for their consistently strong work.
What You Need To Know About The X-Files Reboot
If the pilot is successful and becomes a full TV series, Jennifer Yale, who has written for shows like Dexter and Legion, will lead the project as showrunner. However, as seen with the recent Buffy sequel directed by Chloé Zhao, creating a pilot doesn’t always mean a show will be made. The new X-Files series is still just a pilot, and the network could ultimately decide not to move forward with it.
The project is executive produced by the team behind Yale and Coogler, along with Chris Carter, who created the original X-Files. Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media are also involved. Francine Maisler, the casting director for Sinners, is also overseeing casting for the X-Files pilot.
It’s still unclear if Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will return as Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, as they haven’t officially confirmed their involvement. However, Anderson has spoken with Ryan Coogler and enthusiastically described the potential X-Files reboot script, saying it’s going to be “really cool.”
I’m so excited now that the main actors are confirmed! It feels like we’re just a few months away from filming starting, and I can’t wait to finally get a good idea of what this new take on The X-Files will be like – what kind of stories they’ll tell.
