Ryan Gosling Addresses His Dream Ghost Rider Casting: “Discussions Have Been Had”

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Marvel’s Ghost Rider – the last film featuring the character was in 2011, and the last TV appearance was in 2016. Fans are eager to find out what Marvel has planned for Ghost Rider next, and Ryan Gosling has expressed a long-held desire to play the role, recently sharing an encouraging update about his potential casting.

During a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz about his new movie Project Hail Mary, Star Wars, and the Oscars, Ryan Gosling was asked if he’d talked to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about potentially playing Ghost Rider. Gosling didn’t give a clear answer, but hinted that discussions have taken place, calling the situation “complicated.” He jokingly added that he was glad his wife, Eva Mendes, had already appeared in a Ghost Rider film.

Playing Ghost Rider Would Be A Dream Moment for Ryan Gosling, And A Dream Casting For The MCU

Ryan Gosling mentioned in a 2024 conversation with Horowitz that he’d be thrilled to play Ghost Rider, even playfully suggesting he could ‘come in [and] be Ghost Rider.’ He hadn’t spoken with Marvel’s Kevin Feige about it at that time, but has had discussions over the last two years, which he sees as a good indication that the possibility might be real.

The most recent on-screen appearance of Ghost Rider was in season 4 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where Gabriel Luna played the Robbie Reyes version of the character – a take inspired by the newer comic books. Fans liked his portrayal, but Ghost Rider hasn’t been featured in any Marvel projects since.

The 2007 movie starring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes is probably the most famous Ghost Rider adaptation. In it, Cage plays Johnny Blaze, who battles the villain Blackheart (played by Wes Bentley). Eva Mendes stars as Roxanne Simpson, with Sam Elliott as Carter Slade and Peter Fonda as Mephisto.

Released in 2011, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance brought Nicolas Cage back as Johnny Blaze, but most of the original cast didn’t appear in the sequel. The new film featured Fergus Riordan as Danny Ketch, Violante Placido as Nadya Ketch, Idris Elba as Moreau, Christopher Lambert as Methodius, Johnny Whitworth as Blackout, and Ciaran Hinds as Mephisto.

The original Ghost Rider movie earned $228 million worldwide, but the second film only made $132 million. While Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider was popular on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show, Marvel Studios hasn’t announced any future plans for the character since the show ended.
