I’ve always loved Ryan Gosling, and it’s cool to learn he actually plays music when he’s not filming! So it totally makes sense that he has a really good ear for iconic movie soundtracks and understands what makes a musical scene truly special.

The song playing at the very end of The Breakfast Club is ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me).’ It plays during the scene where he’s reading his letter to the principal, and perfectly matches the final freeze-frame of the raised fist – it’s a really iconic moment.

As a film buff, I always get chills thinking about the ending of The Breakfast Club. That final scene, set to Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, is just iconic. It really is the song that defines the whole movie, you know? It’s about these totally different high school kids who end up connecting during a Saturday detention, and that song perfectly captures the feeling of them realizing they’re not so different after all.

The film begins and ends with the same song. At the end, we hear a letter read by Mr. Vernon (Paul Gleason) – a letter the principal asked for – that reveals how the students who were punished view themselves (mainly through Anthony Michael Hall’s voiceover as Brian Johnson). The narration finishes just as John Bender (Judd Nelson) defiantly walks across the football field and raises his fist, and the movie freezes on that image, marking the end of this story about growing up.

He played Ken, a character longing for Barbie (played by Margot Robbie), and expressed those feelings through a heartfelt ballad. He performed the song to enthusiastic applause at the 96th Academy Awards. However, Billie Eilish ultimately won the Best Original Song award for another song from the movie, “What Was I Made For?”

Ryan Gosling’s new film features him as a science teacher who becomes humanity’s last chance during a troubled space mission, and includes a surprising musical performance. Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, playing her character Eva Stratt, sings Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times” at a party in the movie. Gosling referenced this scene when he recently hosted Saturday Night Live.
