Ryan Gosling didn’t need to imagine how he’d interact with a friendly alien.
Ryan Reynolds’ daughters, 11-year-old Esmeralda and 9-year-old Amada, often helped him prepare for his role in Project Hail Mary. He even shared that his kids, whom he shares with Eva Mendes, would sometimes act as the alien character in the movie to help him rehearse his scenes.
Ryan, 45, explained in an interview with People that he wore an earpiece during filming. Actors would speak lines as Rocky, and he’d respond as the character. He revealed that some of his genuine laughter and charmed reactions in the movie were actually prompted by his children, who were feeding him lines through the earpiece to help him with his performance.
Even though they helped with the movie, his daughters might not be listed in the credits for Project Hail Mary. That’s because James Ortiz actually provides the voice for Rocky, the character who meets Ryland (played by Ryan), a teacher sent into space to save humanity, when the film comes out on March 20th.
Esmeralda and Amada’s contributions to the film didn’t stop there. They also worked with Ryan to make sure his character’s academic-style clothing – including all the little details – felt right for the role.
He remembered his daughter telling him he looked good in glasses while he was trying them on. He replied that he needed to look intelligent for the role, so he appreciated her comment. He also mentioned that, while she liked his new look, she had given him much more detailed feedback on the movie’s script.
As a parent, I’m always looking for honest feedback, and honestly, my kids are my toughest critics! I let them watch early cuts of my work, and they don’t hold back – they give me lots of notes. At the end of the day, their opinions are the only ones that really matter to me. They’re brutally honest, which I actually appreciate!
Ryan is definitely listening to what his daughters want, and he’s even said he accepted this science fiction part specifically to make them happy.
He shared that he’d love to watch a film like this with his family, and expressed how honored he was to have been involved in making it.

Eva’s daughters, Esmeralda and Amada, were very honest when watching the movie Hitch from 2005, just like they were with Project Hail Mary. However, Eva wasn’t expecting their reactions.
While appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2024, the 51-year-old actress recounted performing a physically demanding stunt in the Hudson River for her famous jet ski scene with Will Smith. She admitted she was terrified, but ultimately overcame her fear and felt proud of her performance, even though the initial reaction from those watching wasn’t positive.
