Next year, Ryan Gosling will join the Star Wars universe with the new film, Starfighter. This is his biggest role in a major franchise yet, and it’s a significant opportunity for the future of the Star Wars story. The film will explore completely new territory, separate from the existing Skywalker saga and other Disney Star Wars projects. Gosling is a bit of a surprising choice for a Star Wars lead – the franchise hasn’t typically cast such a well-known star – but he’s already shown he’s a great fit for the role.
I’m really excited about Gosling’s new movie, and honestly, everything points to it being fantastic. He’s built such an incredible filmography, especially over the last decade or so, but what really gets me hyped is his recent streak with sci-fi and space films. After movies like Blade Runner 2049, First Man, and Project Hail Mary, this will be his fourth venture into that world. And let me tell you, he just kills it in these roles. Even First Man, which is probably the ‘weakest’ of the three, is still a phenomenal movie – easily a 9 out of 10, and one of his best performances, in my opinion. 2049 and Hail Mary though? Straight-up masterpieces. So yeah, I have high hopes for this one!
Ryan Gosling & Star Wars Should Be A Perfect Fit

Ryan Gosling, like Harrison Ford, has a natural coolness and charm that makes him captivating on screen. Both actors are incredibly versatile – they can be serious and reserved, as seen in films like Blade Runner 2049 and First Man, or they can embrace humor and play more lighthearted roles, similar to what we see in Project Hail Mary. Ford also had a knack for comedy, which often goes unnoticed.
Considering the character is in a movie called Starfighter, it’s natural to anticipate similarities to Han Solo, though we don’t know much about him yet. He’s already shown he can match Harrison Ford’s performance and even surpass it, while still maintaining his own distinct style.
Ryan Gosling consistently brings a sense of realism to his films, even when they explore complex or deeply emotional ideas. He’s easy to connect with, feels genuinely human—even when playing non-human characters—and possesses a natural charisma. But he’s also a versatile actor who can add surprising depth to his roles, making him a perfect fit for a leading role in a Star Wars movie.
Details about the new film are being kept under wraps, but the story is believed to center on Gosling’s character, a pilot, tasked with protecting a young, Force-sensitive child named Flynn Gray. They’ll be on the run from the villains, traveling across the galaxy to stay safe. Gosling is perfectly suited for the role – he’s funny, charismatic, and can portray a wide range of emotions, and he’s known for having great chemistry with anyone he works with, so the relationship between his character and Gray promises to be fantastic.
Shawn Levy doesn’t have the same critically acclaimed background as the directors Ryan Gosling previously worked with – directors like Denis Villeneuve after Arrival, Damien Chazelle after La La Land, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller after The LEGO Movie and their work on the Spider-Verse films. However, Levy consistently delivers large-scale, enjoyable movies that audiences love, and Gosling has a knack for making those kinds of films even better. Plus, Starfighter boasts a fantastic supporting cast, including Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams.
The success of the new Starfighter movie is crucial for the Star Wars franchise, and Ryan Gosling’s involvement is a definite plus, though the film’s fate doesn’t rest solely on him. Despite The Fall Guy not performing as well as hoped, Project Hail Mary’s strong box office numbers show Gosling can draw large audiences. Combined with a possible awards push leading up to the release, this gives Starfighter a good chance of being a major success.
Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 27th, 2027.
