Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Has An Unexpected Lightsaber Duel… With Tom Cruise Involved!

Shawn Levy, the director of the upcoming Starfighter film, has revealed a unique lightsaber scene will be included. While The Mandalorian & Grogu will return to cinemas this year, fans are already looking forward to 2027 – the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. That celebration will include a re-release of the original A New Hope, alongside Levy’s Starfighter, which is the first film set after the most recent trilogy. The movie boasts a fantastic cast including Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Amy Adams, making it one of the most anticipated Star Wars films in a long time.

Director Shawn Levy recently told the New York Times that his upcoming film, Starfighter, includes a surprise lightsaber fight – and that Tom Cruise actually participated. Levy explained that many famous actors had been visiting the set during filming, including Steven Spielberg the week before. Cruise’s arrival was particularly memorable: he landed in a helicopter while his team played the Mission: Impossible theme song. Levy jokingly suggested Cruise operate one of the cameras, and ended up filming while wearing expensive shoes.

The New York Times reports that director Shawn Levy was filming a lightsaber fight in a muddy pond. He joked that viewers will now know a portion of the movie was shot by Tom, calling it “really cool.” The article also mentioned that actual lightsaber props were being used during filming.

This is Official Confirmation of Jedi – & Possibly Sith?

While Jedi and Sith aren’t the only ones in Star Wars who can use lightsabers, the movies usually avoid showing anyone else wielding them to maintain the lightsaber’s iconic status. Recent comments suggest the new film will feature Jedi, and that the villains – potentially Matt Smith, Mia Goth, or both – will be either dark Jedi or Sith. This is supported by the Ahsoka series, which already introduced characters like Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati who aren’t strictly Sith but use the dark side and lightsabers.

This new information could significantly impact Rey’s efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. The story takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, which ended with Rey beginning to restore the Jedi. Since lightsaber battles require two opponents, it’s likely that at least one of the new characters has a connection to Rey. This is the first look at the Star Wars universe after The Rise of Skywalker, and it now seems the Jedi will play a role in it.

Could Ryan Gosling’s character actually be a Jedi, or used to be one? It’s definitely a possibility. While he’s been introduced as a pilot, skillful piloting has always been linked to the Force, and the title Starfighter seems to intentionally hint at the Jedi Order. Hopefully, we’ll find out for sure soon with more clues and confirmations.
