Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Setting Up Rey’s New Jedi Order Just Got More Likely

I’m so excited for the next Star Wars movie! It sounds like Ryan Gosling’s film might actually tie into the larger story in a really significant way. It’s cool that The Mandalorian and Grogu are bringing us back to the big screen – it’s been a while since The Rise of Skywalker! It feels like a smart move to start there, with characters we already love, as they move away from the Disney+ shows. Then, things are really going to get new and interesting with Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy. I can’t wait to see where this all goes!

Not much is known about the movie’s story, except that it takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm has emphasized that this film will be entirely separate from previous movies, with no returning characters or connections to the existing saga – a first for Star Wars on the big screen. However, recent news suggesting Jedi will be featured in Starfighter raises questions about how disconnected it really is.

How Star Wars: Starfighter Could Set Up Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie

The upcoming game, Star Wars: Starfighter, will feature at least one lightsaber fight, which suggests a Jedi character will appear. While other types of Force users have been introduced in TV shows and other Star Wars media, the films have generally focused on Jedi and Sith. We’ve seen characters like Kylo Ren use lightsabers without being full-fledged Sith, but he had Jedi training, and the line between them wasn’t always clear. Occasionally, non-Jedi heroes like Finn have briefly used a lightsaber, but the films usually stick to the traditional Jedi and Sith roles.

This strengthens the possibility of a connection between the Starfighter movie and the upcoming film featuring Rey and her New Jedi Order. That film will star Daisy Ridley as Rey and was originally planned to take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Since both movies are set after the sequel trilogy, a crossover was always possible, but a shared focus on the Jedi makes it even more likely.

Rumors suggest Ryan Gosling’s character will be mentoring a young boy with Force abilities (played by Flynn Gray). The movie might involve a Jedi, and it’s possible Gosling’s character will bring the boy to Rey at the end, allowing him to train with her new Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley could make a cameo to confirm this connection, or the film could hint at Rey’s involvement without actually showing her, leaving the future open to interpretation.

Would Starfighter Setting Up Rey’s Star Wars Movie Be A Good Thing?

It’s been almost three years since Rey’s new Star Wars movie was first announced at Star Wars Celebration in April 2023, but development has been slow. The project has gone through several writers, and there haven’t been any new cast announcements or signs of filming starting. Despite this, Daisy Ridley is still optimistic about the movie, and 2026 could be the year it starts to come together. However, some are questioning whether linking it to a potential Starfighter project would actually benefit either film.

Lucasfilm might be considering this approach because a successful Starfighter could build anticipation for the film and signal a clear plan for the Star Wars saga after the sequel trilogy. However, it’s a gamble. Rey’s movie isn’t confirmed yet, but ending Starfighter with the child staying with her would at least provide a satisfying conclusion to that story.

The main concern is that connecting this new film, Starfighter, to existing storylines would diminish what makes it special: its originality and independence. While sequels or broader connections could be considered if the film is successful, Star Wars needs to focus on delivering a strong, standalone movie for its return to theaters. It’s more likely to succeed by being self-contained, rather than immediately trying to build a larger franchise. Given the mixed reception to the previous sequels, hinting at hidden connections could actually do more harm than good. Starfighter would be best served by standing on its own, though only time will tell if that happens.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in theaters on May 28th, 2027.
