The first look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos in the upcoming God of War TV series on Prime Video has been revealed. He looks largely as fans would expect, though there are some minor differences in his appearance compared to the character in the video games.
Christopher Judge wasn’t the only actor considered for the role of Kratos in the God of War adaptation; he won the part over several well-known actors like Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa. Early glimpses of his portrayal suggest he’s perfectly suited for the role. He’s seen in costume as Kratos, wearing the character’s signature brown leather clothing and carrying the iconic axe.
He’s instantly recognizable with a shaved head, a long beard, and the red lightning bolt painted across his eye – a trademark of the character Kratos. The artwork depicts him hunting with his son, Atreus, who is also known as the Norse god Loki.
While this TV version of Kratos looks very accurate to the video game, there are a few noticeable differences. Ryan Hurst, the actor playing Kratos, is about the same height as the character in the God of War games, but his facial features aren’t quite identical.
The first image from the Prime Video show reveals a noticeably thinner beard on Hurst, who plays Kratos, compared to the thick, rugged beard fans are familiar with. This difference could be intentional, suggesting the show might depict Kratos as being younger when the story begins.
It’s clear that Hurst’s dark eyes don’t quite match Kratos’s intense, fiery gaze as seen in the games. While this change might lessen the character’s powerful, godlike presence, it also makes him feel more human and believable within the context of the TV show, adding a touch of reality to his otherwise semi-divine nature.
One important difference viewers will notice when God of War arrives on Prime Video is the voice of Kratos. Christopher Judge, who voiced the character in the video games, has a deep, resonant voice. Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos in the series, has a voice that’s a bit higher in pitch but still rough and gravelly.
Christopher Judge Is Right About Hurst Being The Perfect TV Kratos
Ultimately, making a live-action version of a popular animated character believable comes down to the actor’s performance. While Ryan Hurst and the team working on the God of War series for Prime Video can likely make him look and sound like Kratos, it’s his ability to capture the character’s personality that will truly convince viewers he’s the right fit.
Christopher Judge, the original voice of Kratos, has already given his approval of the new live-action actor. He believes the choice was smart because the actor previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök and is also a fan of the original game.
The upcoming Prime Video series, God of War, is expected to be a major fantasy adventure release. Casting Ryan Hurst as Kratos is a smart move, as he’s a fan of the God of War games and has a strong acting background with roles in popular shows like Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. Christopher Judge’s performance is also perfectly suited for the role.
