It’s still uncertain if Ryan Reynolds will play Deadpool in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, but he’s certainly staying busy with other roles. Recently, he was announced to play a villain in a Netflix film based on the Eloise books. Now, it’s been revealed that he’s also remaking a classic Clint Eastwood film – though it won’t be the one featuring Eastwood and an orangutan, unfortunately.
Ryan Reynolds isn‘t revisiting Clint Eastwood’s films Every Which Way But Loose or Any Which Way You Can as previously thought. Instead, he’s focusing on a remake of Eastwood’s 1974 movie Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, which also starred Jeff Bridges. Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort, is partnering with Amazon-MGM for the project. Reynolds is writing the script alongside Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson (known for their work on Fargo) and is also considering starring in the film. This remake will be the first feature film directed by Shane Reid, the editor of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Ryan Reynolds shared a special gift he received: a piece of memorabilia from a John Candy movie. It was given to him by the son of the famous director John Hughes, and Reynolds says items like this are truly meaningful to him.
Shawn Levy shared a touching birthday message for Ryan Reynolds, but the behind-the-scenes photos he included from the set of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ were even more heartwarming.
The film Thunderbolt and Lightfoot features Clint Eastwood as John Doherty, a bank robber hiding as a preacher and escaping a former crew who think he betrayed them. He teams up with Jeff Bridges’ character, a car thief named Lightfoot, and together they plan a new robbery while trying to resolve the issues with the old gang. You can watch Thunderbolt and Lightfoot for free on Tubi and Pluto TV, or with a subscription to MGM+, which is available through Amazon Prime Video.
I remember when Thunderbolt and Lightfoot first came out – critics really liked it, and while it wasn’t a blockbuster, it did okay. Jeff Bridges even got an Oscar nomination for his work in it! Now, The Hollywood Reporter is suggesting a remake could be perfect for two big stars, and honestly, it sounds like this might be the project that reunites Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman after Deadpool & Wolverine. They’re clearly enjoying working together, as they’re already signed on with director Shawn Levy for another film, Boy Band.
Whether Ryan Reynolds will actually make a new version of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is still unknown, but it likely won’t be happening anytime soon. In the meantime, you can see him in Animal Friends, which Warner Bros. is releasing on June 5, 2026.
