Ryan Reynolds is known for playing likable characters, often heroes or those with a good side. But his next role will be very different – it’s set to be his most demanding in years, and the film will stream on Netflix.
I just read the news on Variety – Ryan Reynolds is going to be in a new Netflix movie called Eloise! It’s based on the classic children’s book, which I loved growing up. Apparently, a new actress named Mae Schenk is going to play Eloise, and Reynolds is playing the villain. They’re saying it’s his most challenging role since Mississippi Grind, and he’s playing a completely original character created just for the film. I’m really excited to see what he does with it!

It’s been twenty years since Ryan Reynolds last played a truly villainous role, going back to his performance as George Lutz in The Amityville Horror, but that’s not what we’re focusing on. Instead, we’re highlighting his captivating performance in the 2015 film Mississippi Grind. In that movie, Reynolds delivered one of his best performances, creating a nuanced and compelling character that truly commanded the screen by showcasing a more grounded side of his acting ability.
While Mississippi Grind explored gambling and addiction, and Eloise is a children’s story about a mischievous girl living in The Plaza Hotel, the two are quite different. Still, it’ll be exciting to see Ryan Reynolds play a villain, as he has a unique talent that could really shine in the role.
When Netflix first announced the project, Hannah Minghella, who leads feature animation and family films, explained that Eloise has been a favorite character for generations. First published in the 1950s, Eloise remains a key part of many New York City family trips with her home at The Plaza Hotel. Netflix is thrilled to bring this beloved character back to audiences with a new film created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds, promising a funny and touching story that captures Eloise’s playful spirit.
The Eloise stories have been turned into TV movies like Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime. There was also an animated series called Me, Eloise! which aired on Starz in 2006. Now, the character is being adapted into a live-action format. While a release date hasn’t been announced, we can expect more information soon.
