Ryan Seacrest Has New Wheel of Fortune Rule After Derek Hough Mishap

Ryan Seacrest can buy a vowel, but not a new wheel.

Ryan Seacrest, known for hosting American Idol and recently taking over as host of Wheel of Fortune, has also stepped in to host Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. He recently had Dancing With the Stars judges Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli as guests on the show. During their appearance, something happened that led to a new rule being implemented for all contestants.

During a break in filming, Derek was playfully jumping on the wheel’s center and having Bruno spin it, reminding Ryan of a cake topper. As Ryan explained to USA Today in an interview with Vanna White, they cautioned him against it, worried he would break the unique wheel.

The 50-year-old added, “If that breaks, we have a real problem.’”

Instead, he asked Derek to stand on the contestants’ platform, which was permitted, but added, “We had to gently ask him to stay on the edge.”

Even though something went wrong, Ryan was happy to have the stars from Dancing With the Stars filming on September 29th.

“They’re very physical,” he continued, “and that makes for fun.”

Ryan also mentioned that he finds it easier to connect with contestants he already knows personally, like Derek. He previously dated Derek’s sister, Julianne Hough, from 2010 to 2013, which helped build that rapport.

It’s easier to playfully joke with someone you’re close to, like a friend,” the former host of Live With Kelly and Ryan said. “You can get away with more teasing when you have that kind of relationship.

Ryan connects well with contestants and has been well-received by viewers, particularly by his fellow host.

Vanna praised him, saying he consistently performs his job excellently. She noted he was well-prepared even before beginning, and that preparation has clearly been successful.

Ryan Seacrest is still hosting American Idol and has recently added Wheel of Fortune to his list of jobs. Here’s an update on what other former Idol contestants and personalities are doing now.

Kelly Clarkson, mother to River and Remy, has achieved incredible success since first appearing on American Idol in 2002. Based in New York, she’s won three Grammy Awards, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart three times, served as a judge on NBC’s The Voice, and now hosts the popular and award-winning daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The runner-up from season two of the show shared two significant announcements in September 2008. He revealed the birth of his son, Parker, with his friend and music producer Jaymes Foster, was a major reason he decided to come out publicly. He explained on Good Morning America that he couldn’t teach his son to be dishonest or hide parts of himself. He also wanted to create an environment where his son could be his authentic self, no matter what.

Since then, this well-known performer with red hair transitioned from music to politics, even running for Congress in 2016. After the election, he released a documentary detailing his experiences. However, he hasn’t completely left music behind – in 2023 and 2024, he toured the country with season two winner Ruben Studdard.

Ruben, the winner of season two of Idol, went on to achieve significant success, including a Grammy nomination and several popular albums. In 2013, he appeared as a contestant on The Biggest Loser, quickly becoming a crowd favorite. Though eliminated twice, he gained valuable insights from the experience. Beyond his career, Ruben has a strong relationship with fellow Idol contestant Clay, and recently welcomed his second child with his wife, Kristin, in 2024.

The season three champion recently expressed gratitude for everything she’s experienced. In a December 2023 interview with TopMob News, she explained that life involves setbacks and resilience: “We go through things, you fall, you get back up.” Despite facing challenges, she feels a strong sense of accomplishment, especially after overcoming significant obstacles to reach this point.

Recently, she’s celebrated personal milestones like welcoming her daughter Keziah with husband Kendall Taylor in 2021, and receiving a Golden Globe nomination for her role in The Color Purple remake. As a mother to both Keziah and her adult daughter Zion, she shared her desire to savor this moment, knowing how much hard work it took to get here.

Although she didn’t win season three of the competition, this musician has achieved incredible success. She won an Oscar for Dreamgirls in 2006 and a Grammy for her work in the 2017 adaptation of The Color Purple. She’s also been a judge on The Voice. Most recently, this mom to son David is launching her own talk show.

Carrie Underwood instantly became a pop culture icon when she appeared on Idol, and she proved her talent by winning season four. She’s since become one of country music’s biggest stars.

For over a decade, she also co-hosted the CMA Awards alongside Brad Paisley. Balancing her successful music career and hosting duties, Carrie is also a mom to two sons with her husband, retired hockey player Mike Fisher.

Carrie Underwood will be joining the judging panel of American Idol in 2024, taking over for Katy Perry.

The runner-up from season four of the show is now married with four children – three boys and a girl. Even after facing significant health issues in 2006, this Southern rock artist has continued to release several successful albums since appearing on Idol.

Constantine, known for his powerful voice and memorable performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” on season four of a singing competition, quickly transitioned to Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for his role in Rock of Ages. The father of Malena, born in 2010, continued his stage career and starred in Rock & Roll Man in 2023.

Following his win on season five, the singer’s album went platinum, and he appeared in a Broadway production of Grease. In 2016, he transitioned to television, hosting State-Plate, a show centered around locally-sourced food. Despite his TV work, he still loves music and continues to perform in concerts.

Before Justin Bieber became a pop sensation, Katharine McPhee gained recognition through what some called “McPheever,” which launched her career in both singing and acting. She’s best known for her roles in the musical drama Smash and the television series Scorpion.

Married to music producer David Foster since 2019, Katharine is now a mother to her son, Rennie, who shows a natural aptitude for music. In a 2023 interview with TopMob News, she shared her hope that Rennie will become proficient in various instruments, just like his father, but emphasized that they’re letting him explore his interests without pressure. She believes he’s already well on his way to developing a strong musical background.

Following his appearance on American Idol, season five finalist Elliott, known for his song “Wait for You,” traveled to Angola. There, he teamed up with former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi to support Malaria No More. In 2010, Elliott also gained attention for surviving the earthquake in Chile and sharing his experience on Twitter. He continues to make music and is a father to Camilla, with Karen Cruz.

Kellie Pickler gained recognition finishing sixth on the fifth season of American Idol and went on to star in Hallmark’s Christmas in Graceland. She also received three Daytime Emmy nominations for her TV show, Pickler & Ben.

After the tragic loss of her husband, Kyle Jacobs, to suicide in February 2023, Kellie shared a meaningful lesson he taught her. In a difficult moment, he advised her to simply ‘do nothing, just be still.’ She told People magazine in 2023 that she’s choosing to follow his guidance during this time.

The winner of season six made a big impact in 2007, becoming the youngest female to ever win the competition. She then toured the country with 35 city stops, and later made her Broadway debut in the 2010 production of In the Heights. Her success continued, and in May 2018 she welcomed her first son with Dana Isaiah. Since then, she’s returned to Idol and competed on season 31 of Dancing With the Stars.

David, the season seven winner known for his hit song “Time of My Life,” has experienced success both on and off stage. In 2010, he traveled to Ethiopia with the United Nations to support their work empowering women. He also participated in the Race for Hope in Washington D.C., raising funds for brain cancer research in memory of his brother, Adam, who passed away in 2009. Married to Racheal Stump since 2015, David continues to tour and released his latest single, “TABOS,” in 2022.

After placing second on season seven of the show, the singer spent two years in Chile serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He resumed performing after returning in 2014.

He publicly came out as LGBTQ+ in June 2021. In an October 2023 Instagram post, he shared, “It’s been a beautiful journey learning to accept myself,” and expressed hope that living openly would inspire others to do the same.

While Adam Lambert received a lot of attention as the runner-up, season eight’s winner has been steadily successful with his second album, released in November 2009. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart, and his single, “I Need to Know,” appeared in an episode of The Vampire Diaries. He’s also been busy growing his family, welcoming three children with his high school sweetheart, Katy O’Connell.

The runner-up from the eighth season of the show has truly become a star. Since appearing on the competition, he’s released multiple albums, gone on tour, and earned numerous award nominations. He’s even followed in the footsteps of Freddie Mercury by becoming the lead singer for Queen and starred in a remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He also briefly served as a guest judge on Idol and kicked off the 2019 Oscars with a performance of Queen’s iconic songs, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

Danny Gokey married Leyicet Peralta in 2012, following his appearance on season eight of American Idol. They now have four children together.

Danny Gokey, a three-time Grammy nominee, released the Christian music album Jesus People in 2021. He’s also the founder of his own eyewear brand, Danny Gokey Eyewear.

Following his appearance as a top 10 finalist on the summer tour in 2010, the season nine winner began his career as a solo musician. He married model and actress Jonna Walsh in 2012 after meeting her while filming the music video for his first song after appearing on Idol. Today, he’s a successful singer-songwriter, and his music has even been featured on shows like The Walking Dead.

The singer, who finished as a runner-up on season nine of a singing competition, married musician Brian Walker and released her debut album, Farmer’s Daughter, in December 2010. Although her record label closed down, she began acting, appearing on the second season of the TV show Body of Proof.

In May 2013, she and her husband separated. Following their divorce, she described her second album, All That For This, as a fresh start and the next phase of her life in an interview with The Boot.

Oh my gosh, I was so excited when Scotty McCreery won Season 10! He was the first winner since Ruben Studdard to have his first album, Clear as Day, hit number one on the Billboard 200 – seriously, I pre-ordered it! And 2011 was his year – New Artist of the Year at the American Country Awards, and he even sang the national anthem at the World Series! It feels like yesterday, but he’s grown up so much! He finally married his amazing girlfriend, Gabi Dugal, in June 2018, and I was thrilled for them. Then, in October 2022, they had a little boy, Avery! I’m completely obsessed and can’t wait to see what happens next!

As a lifestyle observer, I’ve always been impressed by this artist’s journey! While she was runner-up on a certain singing competition, she quickly landed a record deal and released her first album, Wildflower, back in 2011. That year was huge – she hit the stage with the winner at the CMT Music Awards, made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry, and even shared the stage with the incredible Martina McBride at the CMA Music Festival.

Fast forward to 2017, and she earned her first CMA nomination for Best New Artist thanks to her album Road Less Traveled. She even branched out into acting, starring in a movie with the same name!

More recently, things have been wonderful in her personal life. She announced her engagement to Cam Arnold during a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in November 2022, and they officially tied the knot in February 2024. It’s been lovely to watch her thrive both professionally and personally!

Although he only placed sixth on season ten of the show, he quickly became a fan favorite. He joined the Idols Live tour and even recorded a duet of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with fellow contestant Haley Reinhart, with whom he was rumored to be romantically involved. He eventually signed with the jazz label Concord Records. His first self-titled album came out in 2012, followed by I Put A Spell On You in 2018 and Jazz in 2019.

Jimmie Allen was eliminated before the live shows on season 10 of a singing competition, but he’s since become a successful musician with two chart-topping songs: “Best Shot” (2018) and “Make Me Want To.” He also won the Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year in 2021.

In April 2023, Jimmie and his wife, Alexis Allen, announced they were expecting their third child while also ending their two-year marriage. Shortly after, Jimmie was accused of sexual assault and abuse by his former manager in a lawsuit. He admitted to being unfaithful and publicly apologized to Alexis for the affair, but denied the allegations of misconduct, claiming the relationship with his manager was consensual.

After welcoming their son, Cohen Ace James, in September, the couple announced they were working to reconcile their marriage.

Following his victory on season 11, the musician’s single “Home” became a chart-topping hit and was featured as the theme song for NBC’s 2012 Summer Olympics coverage.

In 2015, he married Hannah Blackwell in a private ceremony with loved ones. They later welcomed their son, Patch, in 2019.

The singer hinted to TopMob News before releasing her 2019 album, Whirlwind, that it features a diverse range of musical styles. She explained that, a year after winning Idol, she didn’t want to limit herself to one particular sound because she enjoyed experimenting with different approaches.

Since finishing as a finalist on season 16 of the show, the singer has been busy creating new music and taking advantage of the opportunities that came with being on ABC. Caleb Lee told TopMob News that he’s always been passionate about music and dreamed of being a performer, but the show taught him a lot about the entertainment industry. He even had the chance to join Luke Bryan on stage during Bryan’s final tour show and perform a song. Caleb’s newest album, Southern Galactic, was released in October 2023.

Following her third-place finish on season 16 of Idol, singer Gabby Barrett dedicated herself to completing her album. She expressed her excitement about performing at Stagecoach and called touring with Brad Paisley a fantastic bonus. “It’s amazing to be touring with him,” she told TopMob News.

Gabby and her husband, Cade Foehner, also welcomed three children. Their daughter, Baylah, arrived nearly two years ago, followed by son Augustine in October 2022, and another baby in February 2024.
