Following the PlayStation 5 launch of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the game’s developer, GSC Game World, shared details about the console version. In an interview with WCCFTech, communications director Zakhar Bocharov and technical director Ievgen Kulyk stated that the PS5 Pro version of the open-world shooter aims for graphics quality comparable to the ‘High’ settings on the PC version.
According to Bocharov, optimizing a game for consoles presents unique challenges compared to PC. He explained that the PlayStation 5 Pro version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl isn’t exactly the same as the PC version’s High settings, but is instead aiming for a similar level of visual quality.
Optimizing the game for consoles is more involved than simply transferring settings from the PC version,” explained Bocharov. “It’s difficult to say exactly how the PS5 Pro version will perform, but it’s likely to be comparable to the PC version’s High settings. We expect to see videos comparing performance across different platforms soon, allowing players to judge for themselves.”
Kulyk shared more specifics about how S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will perform on the PS5 and the more powerful PS5 Pro. On the standard PS5, the game aims for 2K resolution at 60 frames per second in performance mode, and 4K resolution at 30 FPS in quality mode. The PS5 Pro is targeting 4K at 60 FPS for performance mode, and 4K at 30 FPS with increased visual detail in quality mode. He also clarified that the game will use Unreal Engine 5’s TSR technology for upscaling, and not PSSR.
Bocharov also discussed the past year since the release of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl on PC and Xbox Series X/S. The game has been quite successful, and the developers have released seven large updates, along with many smaller ones, to add new content and improve how it runs. They plan to continue supporting and updating the game in the future.
According to GSC Game World’s Bocharov, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been a success. The game sold over a million copies in just three days and has been played by several million more through Game Pass on PC and Xbox. Throughout the year, the developers released seven large updates, along with many smaller ones, to improve the game’s performance and add new content.
The game has changed a lot since it first came out. Updating games is a complicated process, and with a game like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., there’s always room for improvement – it feels like the work could go on endlessly. However, the developers plan to keep moving forward with updates.
The studio also shared a message on social media today thanking Xbox for its support over the past year. They confirmed that even though the game will soon leave Xbox Game Pass, GSC Game World and Xbox will continue to work together.
