Sabrina Carpenter likes her songs up for interpretation.
It’s uncertain if her songs and videos are referencing her former boyfriend Barry Keoghan, as fans can only wonder due to the frequent assumptions about hints towards their one-year relationship being present in her work.
In response to ongoing discussions about her song lyrics, Sabrina remarked during an Aug. 29 interview on CBS Mornings that it’s more enjoyable for people to imagine the characters themselves rather than the versions she visualizes.
After parting ways in December, Sabrina (age 26) and Barry (age 32) generally avoided discussing their breakup directly. However, prior to the separation, Barry had criticized fans for delving excessively into his private life.
The actor from ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ who is also the father of Brando and was once in a relationship with Alyson Sandro, penned down on December 7 that he has been subjected to online rumors and slander that he usually chooses not to address. However, due to the escalating situation and the crossing of boundaries, he feels compelled to respond now.
Barry reacted defensively towards the fans, whereas Sabrina explained her perspective on not being responsible for the rumors.
In simpler terms, the singer known as “Manchild” shared during an interview on CBS Mornings that he finds himself quite open and honest in his relationships, as many of his songs are inspired by these experiences. Often, when someone is featured in one of his songs, whether positive or negative, they tend to be pleased. They seem to view it as a form of recognition or shoutout.
The notion that her song lyrics would prevent men from wanting to date her is completely absurd.
Sabrina stated, ‘I don’t fear men in that regard.’ She believes she will draw the right people into her life.
Nevertheless, the Grammy-winning artist has explained in the past why she prefers to keep her personal matters confidential.
She expressed to Rolling Stone in June that many people underestimate the complexity of being a young woman, managing relationships, and having strangers pass judgment. She implied that if these critics were subjected to the same level of scrutiny on their personal lives, they might not be as articulate as she is.
She added, “I know it’s a tale as old as time. It’s just unfortunate that it’s still a tale.”

Many people don’t share the same enthusiasm for Sabrina Carpenter’s fondness for lace and suggestive song lyrics. In a strong critique, music producer Pete Waterman even deemed her live performances as blatantly “inappropriate.
In January 2025, Waterman stated that women have achieved all their liberties and rights. He further expressed his viewpoint that while women had struggled hard to earn these privileges, they are now recklessly giving them up.
And in her response, the Girl Meets World alum did not hold back.
Sabrina stated during an interview with The Sun on Sunday that her message has consistently been straightforward: if you find it difficult to accept a woman who embraces her own sexual confidence, then perhaps her performances aren’t for you.
She went on to say, ‘Female artists have faced public shaming throughout history. In the 2000s it was Rihanna, in the 1990s it was Britney Spears, and in the 1980s it was Madonna – now, unfortunately, it’s my turn.’
To those who criticize Sabrina’s well-known “Juno” poses and suggest her provocative lyrics are unoriginal, Sabrina defended herself against such “backward” views.
In simpler terms, the pop star stated that it appears the critics are focusing on her expressing her sexuality in her music, attire, and performance rather than other common topics like self-care, body positivity, or heartbreak. She suggested that these criticisms arise only when discussing the sensual aspects of her performances.
Throughout Sabrina’s “Short n’ Sweet” Tour, some critics on social media voiced their doubts about whether the “Espresso” singer was singing live during her performances.
In a TikTok video from October 2024, someone commented, “I don’t like to admit it, but the performance was about 30% lip-syncing, 30% backing track, and 40% actual singing.
The Disney alum, however, was quick to shoot down the claims.
Sabrina emphasized that she performs live at all shows without any exceptions. If you have any questions about the sound, I’d be happy to connect you with our audio team.”
This paraphrase maintains the original meaning but rephrases it in a more formal and clear manner while also adding context for further discussions regarding the audio quality of her performances.
It doesn’t take many words for the Grammy nominee to silence her haters.
In June 2024, someone who mostly uses the internet for combat expressed their dissatisfaction towards Sabrina’s popular single “Please Please Please.
On X, previously known as Twitter, the user commented, “It seems incredibly rare for someone to botch a second serve as badly as this,” expressing amazement with, “my word.
Once her song hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, she shared a pair of screengrabs showing the rankings and added a thankful message: “I’m so incredibly grateful, grateful, grateful.
After facing criticism for her acclaimed “Feather” music video shot inside the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (where she had been given permission to film), Sabrina’s account of events differed from what Msgr. Jamie J. Gigantiello described in his formal statement.
According to the pastor’s statement from November 2023, the parish failed to adhere to the diocesan policy on filming within church property. This policy involves scrutinizing the content of the footage and the script beforehand.
But Sabrina refuted his claims with one simple sentence.
“We got approval in advance,” Sabrina quipped to Variety at the time, “and Jesus was a carpenter.”
At Madison Square Garden, New York City, in September 2024, Sabrina hinted at her “Feather” music video controversy contributing to Eric Adams’ federal investigation as the city’s mayor. The clergyman who endorsed Sabrina’s “Feather” video-despite claiming ignorance of its explicit content-experienced a demotion, triggering a wider examination of the parish administration.
According to their review, the diocese informed the New York Post that they suspect there may be business ties between the Parish and Adams’ administration, particularly between the pastor and high-ranking officials within the embattled mayor’s administration. (It should be noted that the mayor is currently facing charges of bribery and a wire fraud scheme, but he has pleaded not guilty to these allegations.)
And to that, Sabrina said, “Should we talk about how I got the mayor indicted or…”
