Sadie Sink & Tina Fey’s Upcoming Movie Based On 73-Year-Old Tragic Story Gets Major Production Update

Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things, is joining forces with Tina Fey for a film based on John Proctor is the Villain. News just came out about a significant development in the movie’s production. Sink recently finished filming the last season of the popular show Stranger Things.

Before the TV show finished, she appeared on Broadway in the play John Proctor is the Villain, and her performance earned her a nomination for a Tony Award.

Universal Pictures is making a film version of the popular play, and Danya Taymor, who directed the original Broadway production, will also direct the movie, according to Deadline.

Kimberly Belflower, the writer of the Broadway show, is also writing the screenplay. The film will be produced by Dylan Sink, Tina Fey, Eric Gurian, Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, and Jared LeBoff.

John Proctor is the Villain explores how modern high school students, reading Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible in the context of the #MeToo movement, are questioning the traditional heroic portrayal of John Proctor and recognizing his flaws.

Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, first appeared on Broadway in 1953. It’s set during the Salem witch trials of the 1600s and focuses on John Proctor, who struggles with a difficult moral choice. His wife, Elizabeth, is accused of witchcraft, and he must decide if he should expose the truth about Abigail Williams, who started a wave of false accusations against many people in Salem.

The first production of The Crucible was a major success at the Tony Awards, winning four awards, including Best Play, Best Author, Best Producer, and Best Featured Actress (Beatrice Straight).

After more than seventy years, a new Broadway production of John Proctor is the Villain opened, following successful runs in Washington, DC, and Boston. Sadie Sink had already finished filming her part in the fifth season of Stranger Things, allowing her to fully focus on John Proctor during her four-month involvement with the play. The production concluded in September 2025.

The play John Proctor is the Villain received seven nominations at the 2025 Tony Awards. These included nominations for Best Play, Best Actress (Sink), Best Featured Actress (Fina Strazza), Best Featured Actor (Gabriel Ebert), Best Direction of a Play, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design.

Sadie Sink is known for her role in Stranger Things, but she’s also appeared in Fear Street Part Two: 1978, Fear Street Part Three: 1666, The Whale, and American Odyssey.

After appearing on Broadway in 2025, she’ll be performing in a West End production of Romeo & Juliet this spring. She’s also part of the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, which comes out July 31st, but her role is currently being kept secret.

In addition to her acting work on Stranger Things, the actress is now collaborating with Tina Fey on a movie based on John Proctor is the Villain. With Julie Taymor directing, the film is now significantly closer to becoming a reality, though a release date hasn’t been set yet.
