Saints Row Developer Teases New Game (And It Sounds Awesome)

A lead creator from the Saints Row series might be planning a comeback for the popular open-world crime game. Following the huge success of Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels in the early 2000s, many developers started making similar games where players could freely explore large worlds. Saints Row was one of the most successful, appearing before GTA 4 and concentrating on gang life—something Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas touched on, but wasn’t a major focus. Over time, Saints Row became known for its over-the-top and unusual style.

The Saints Row series initially focused on gang life, with Saints Row: The Third being particularly exaggerated. The games then took a dramatic shift with Saints Row IV, which featured superpowers and a plot involving fighting aliens as the President of the United States. A further expansion even sent players to Hell. After this, the series felt creatively exhausted, leading to a reboot. Sadly, the rebooted Saints Row was unsuccessful and ultimately led to the closure of the development studio, Volition. It didn’t resonate with fans and didn’t live up to the quality of previous games.

New Saints Row Prequel May Happen

Many thought the Saints Row series was finished, but that’s not true. Chris Stockman, who previously led the game’s design, has shared that Embracer Group, the company that owns Saints Row, has asked him to propose a new game in the series. This news follows Stockman’s recent interview where he explained his issues with the latest reboot – a game he wasn’t involved in creating. He’d previously suggested rebooting the series as a prequel set in the 1970s, and then publicly asked Embracer Group to contact him – and to his surprise, they did!

Stockman is attempting to reunite the original team to develop a pitch for a new Saints Row game. He wants to return the series to its classic style, reminiscent of the very first game. While Embracer Group had said Saints Row would continue even after Volition’s closure, fans were skeptical. This new effort might be our best hope for another installment in the franchise.

Honestly, it all depends on if Embracer Group likes what Stockman comes up with. I remember hearing they actually had ideas for a proper Saints Row 5 at one point, but those plans changed and led to the reboot we got. From what I understand, a big part of why the reboot didn’t work was because the people in charge started micromanaging the creative side of things. I’m really hoping they’ll let the developers have more freedom this time around, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
