Sakamoto Days’ Live Action Adaptation Grows With New Cast Announcement

Adapting anime into live-action shows and movies is becoming increasingly popular, and Netflix has already seen success with series like One Piece, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Yu Yu Hakusho. Interestingly, despite the competition among anime streaming services, Netflix isn’t involved in the upcoming live-action movie based on one of its own popular anime titles, Sakamoto Days. The first live-action Sakamoto Days film is scheduled for release next year, and the actors for two key characters have already been chosen.

The live-action movie adaptation of Sakamoto Days is rounding out its cast, following the earlier announcements of Ren Meguro as Taro Sakamoto and Shin Asakura as Fumiya Takahashi. Recently, Ueta Aya was cast as Aoi Sakamoto, Taro’s wife, and Yoshimoto Miyu will play their daughter, Hana Sakamoto. In the series, Aoi and Hana were the primary reason Taro left his life as a hitman, though his past continues to affect his present as a convenience store owner.

Actress Aya Ueto, excited to play Taro’s love interest, shared her thoughts on joining the live-action adaptation of Sakamoto Days. She fell in love with the manga’s world and immediately wanted to be involved. This was her first time working with Meguro Ren, whose thoughtful and genuine acting she’d long admired. She was impressed by his dedication on set and felt honored to collaborate with him. Ueto believes her character, Sakamoto Aoi, brings a heartwarming depiction of family life to the comedic story and hopes to add a special touch to the film. She understands viewers are curious about how the manga will translate to live-action and encourages everyone to see it in theaters. She’s eager to see the final result herself.

It’s sad news for fans of Sakamoto Days: the manga is nearing its end, with the final story arc currently being published. While the author, Yuto Suzuki, hasn’t announced an exact end date, the series will be greatly missed. The good news is that the anime, available on Netflix, still has a lot of manga content to adapt, meaning we could see new seasons for years to come.
