Sam Altman Admits GPT-5 Might Outshine Him: What Does This Mean for AI’s Future?

Although OpenAI and Sam Altman have mostly kept quiet about GPT-4’s follow-up, GPT-5, the CEO disclosed additional details about this confidential and eagerly awaited model during a panel talk on The Age of AI at TU Berlin.

The executive posed a question to the crowd, “How many among you consider yourselves more intelligent than GPT 4?” Quite a few individuals in the audience responded by lifting their hands, leading him to ask another question: “So, who believes they’ll outsmart GPT 5 as well?”

It’s worth noting that not many individuals responded when asked to raise their hands. According to the executive, this model might even outsmart him.

I doubt I’ll surpass GPT-5 in intelligence, but that doesn’t dishearten me because it opens up possibilities for groundbreaking achievements. After all, we strive for advancement and aim to equip researchers with tools they never had before, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, just as humanity has always done throughout history.

By the way, the creators of ChatGPT recently participated in a Q&A session on Reddit, where they discussed various topics such as their dedication to their original vision (DeepSeek), future product releases, and updates on GPT-5. OpenAI didn’t provide an exact launch date for GPT-5, but Sam Altman confirmed that it is currently being developed and will be released under the “GPT” name, similar to its previous versions.

Previously, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has discussed GPT-5 and its advanced features on multiple occasions. In fact, he asserted last year that GPT-5 would demonstrate a significantly higher level of intelligence compared to GPT-4, claiming it with a strong confidence level.

As per the CEO, GPT-4 is not living up to expectations, being described as somewhat disappointing or underwhelming, and at its best, only moderately satisfactory.

You’ll likely encounter GPT-4, our model, as the one with the most room for improvement compared to those you’ve used before. Our philosophy is to launch products quickly and frequently, and we advocate for continuous updates in our deployment process.

In the grand scheme of things, GPT-5 promises to bring better performance and accuracy to ChatGPT.

Over the past month, the AI field has faced several challenges. Leading labs have encountered obstacles in advancing AI technology due to a scarcity of premium content for model training. Meanwhile, OpenAI announced a massive $500 billion investment to build sophisticated U.S infrastructure, and DeepSeek introduced an AI solution that offers exceptional affordability. It’ll be intriguing to observe whether GPT-5 will shift the balance in favor of OpenAI again.
