What you need to know

  • OpenAI might be getting ready to release a new AI model dubbed Strawberry with reasoning capabilities in two weeks.
  • The AI model will reportedly ship as part of ChatGPT, but as a standalone service.
  • At launch, the model’s capabilities may be limited to text-generation, though plans to make it multimodal could be in the works.

As a tech enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say I am both excited and cautiously optimistic about OpenAI’s upcoming AI model, Strawberry. The prospect of an advanced reasoning AI is intriguing, and if executed well, it could revolutionize the way we interact with technology.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the news for quite some time now, and it seems that my wait could soon be over! According to reports from The Information, OpenAI might be ready to debut its highly-anticipated ‘reasoning’ AI model, Strawberry, in just two weeks. I can hardly contain my excitement!

It appears that the creators of ChatGPT are getting ready to release their AI model, which they’ve been refining for several months, on a wide scale. Based on various sources discussing this AI named Strawberry, it will be shipped with advanced reasoning abilities, enabling it to tackle complex assignments.

It’s been reported that OpenAI could face bankruptcy within a year, potentially facing up to $5 billion in losses. To help offset these costs, they might increase fees for their subscription services. Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Apple are considering providing additional funding to keep OpenAI afloat, which could boost the company’s market value to over $100 billion.

As an analyst examining the latest developments, I can confirm that it appears OpenAI might be considering a subscription fee of approximately $2,000 per month for access to their advanced AI models. At this stage, the specifics about any transition in OpenAI’s business strategy are still unclear.

OpenAI has now exceeded a million paying business users, while ChatGPT has reached 200 million daily active users. The company credits the significant expansion and success primarily to the launch of GPT-4, which led to unprecedented increases in both revenue and downloads for ChatGPT, maintaining its dominance on mobile platforms.

Everything we know about Strawberry

As a researcher studying AI, I’ve gathered that the AI model in question is set to be integrated into ChatGPT as a standalone service, separate from other applications. However, specifics on OpenAI’s strategies for this implementation are currently scant. Initially, the capabilities of this model, named Strawberry, will primarily focus on text generation. There may be future plans to expand its functionalities into multimodal interactions through potential updates.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has candidly criticized GPT-4’s performance, describing it as “not very impressive” or “quite disappointing.” Altman further stated with a strong level of confidence that the upcoming GPT-5 will surpass GPT-4 significantly, which he deemed only “mildly satisfactory at best.” According to Altman, GPT-4 is the least intelligent model users will likely encounter in the future, and emphasized the importance of releasing products early and frequently, as well as continuous updates.

It remains unclear at this point whether GPT-5 is indeed referred to as Strawberry. OpenAI has hinted at departing from conventional naming patterns for their AI models, which could imply a fresh nickname for GPT-5, following the progression from GPT-1 through GPT-4.

Despite allegations of bankruptcy, it’s evident that Altman doesn’t hesitate to splurge generously on transporting cutting-edge AI systems.

“I think giving people really capable tools and letting them figure out how they’re going to use this to build the future is a super good thing to do, and is super valuable, and I am super willing to bet on the ingenuity of you all and everybody else in the world to figure out what to do about this. There is probably some more business-minded person than me at OpenAI somewhere that is worried about how much we’re spending, but I kind of don’t.”

In the previous year, it is said that OpenAI allegedly invested approximately $520 million into the development of ChatGPT, a significant portion of which was allocated towards meeting the technology’s substantial energy and water needs for cooling.

Here’s an update on the evolving situation: We’ll share further information with you as soon as we learn more about OpenAI’s Strawberry initiative. Stay tuned!
