Sam Raimi is famous for directing popular superhero films, but a lesser-known, fan-favorite movie he made over 35 years ago might finally get a sequel. While most people remember his Spider-Man trilogy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this earlier film has remained largely unnoticed. However, Raimi says a sequel is being planned, and all it needs now is funding.
I was really excited to read an interview with Sam Raimi about his new film, Send Help. Someone asked him if he’d ever consider bringing Darkman back, and honestly, his answer was surprisingly hopeful! It sounds like he’s definitely open to the idea, which is fantastic news for fans like me.
So, things are moving forward with the sequel at Ghost House Pictures, where I work! We actually have a script and have lined up two fantastic directors. The usual hurdle, though – getting the financing sorted. It’s just how things always seem to go in this industry, unfortunately.
Released in 1990, Darkman features Liam Neeson as Dr. Peyton Westlake. After being horribly beaten and left for dead by gangster Robert Durant, Westlake undergoes an experimental treatment that gives him incredible abilities, but also leaves him mentally damaged. Driven by revenge, he transforms into Darkman to hunt down those who disfigured him. The film is director Sam Raimi’s tribute to classic Universal horror films and was his way of creating a unique superhero after being unable to secure the rights to The Shadow.
Critics generally liked the film, giving it an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and highlighting director Raimi’s creation of a strikingly memorable and surprisingly violent story. One critic described it as having the emotional depth of a classic Gothic tragedy combined with the energetic style of a comic book. While audiences weren’t as enthusiastic, the movie still performed well at the box office, earning $48.8 million worldwide on a $14 million budget. Two follow-up TV movies were made, but they weren’t successful.
Sam Raimi Continues To Deliver

Sam Raimi has been busy producing films like Boy Kills World, Locked, Don’t Move, and the recent Evil Dead movies, including this year’s Evil Dead Burn. He also directed Send Help, a new film starring Rachel McAdams. The movie follows an employee and her boss who become stranded on an island after a plane crash, leading to a tense and violent fight for survival.

The film hits theaters on January 30th, marking director Sam Raimi’s first superhero movie since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although Raimi isn’t actively seeking another superhero project, he’s expressed a long-held desire to direct his own take on The Shadow, if he can secure the necessary rights.
