Sam Raimi Gives an Update on Highly Anticipated Horror Sequel

The 2019 horror film Crawl initially seemed like a movie best suited for late-night television, not a big screen release. Produced by horror veteran Sam Raimi, the film centers on a woman (Kaya Scodelario) and her father (Barry Pepper) battling a Category 5 hurricane in Florida, only to become trapped in a flooded basement with dangerous alligators. Despite its low-budget feel, Crawl was skillfully directed by Alexandre Aja and featured a compelling performance from Scodelario. This elevated the simple premise – alligators in a basement – with intense suspense and impressive visuals, ultimately earning over $91 million globally on a $15 million budget. Although audiences and critics immediately wanted a sequel to this effective creature feature, a follow-up has never materialized.

Sam Raimi recently shared that a sequel to his film Crawl is now a possibility. He’d been seeking approval for the project, and recent changes at Paramount Pictures – specifically the merger with Skydance and the resulting new leadership – have given him renewed hope. Raimi, who was discussing the success of his latest film, Send Help, in an interview with The Wrap, has worked with the new team before and believes they are excellent at developing projects. He indicated that they are interested in moving forward with Crawl 2, but couldn’t share further details at this time.

Sam Raimi admitted he finds the idea of making a sequel to Crawl – a movie about alligators – in a low-budget style a little awkward, which he believes is why studio approval is taking time. He thinks there’s an audience for fun, well-made ‘B movies’ like that, especially if they focus on suspense, scares, and character development. He emphasized that even though it’s not a high-art film, it can still be a really enjoyable experience.

Crawl Deserves a Sequel, and Fast

Since its release in 2019, Crawl has become a favorite among horror fans, often considered the best alligator movie ever made. It stands out because it focuses on building tension rather than relying on flashy visuals. Though the idea of alligators trapped in a basement sounds simple, director Aja turned it into a thrilling story with excellent pacing and a strong sense of atmosphere. The film also takes the time to develop its characters, making us genuinely care about what happens to them. This realistic approach, combined with impressive practical effects, makes Crawl a truly gripping horror-thriller. This is a strong reason to make a sequel, Crawl 2, and the basic premise is flexible enough to allow for exciting new locations, as the director has already suggested.

Look, the stars are aligning for a Crawl 2, and it’s all thanks to Sam Raimi’s recent success with Send Help. I mean, that movie has been a genuine surprise hit – we’re talking $53.7 million worldwide in just ten days! It even topped the box office charts here for two weekends, which is huge for an original horror film. And with a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Send Help has really cemented Raimi’s place as a top horror director. He’s got serious clout with the studio now, and that makes getting a sequel to Crawl – a project he clearly cares about – much more likely. The timing couldn’t be better.

Send Help is currently playing in theaters.
