Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 Movie Gets Exciting Update

Since Tobey Maguire returned as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have been hoping for another movie starring his version of the character. Maguire was the first actor to play Spider-Man in a major film series, leading the original Spider-Man trilogy directed by Sam Raimi.

Many people are eager to see a fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, and that includes those working in Hollywood. Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman and The Batman – Part II, recently addressed a fan on X (formerly Twitter) about his efforts to make Spider-Man 4 happen. Here’s what he said:

The speaker emphasized the importance of consistent, gradual progress, stating that this principle is likely to remain true for a long time, as its success depends on many factors outside of their control. Despite this, they added optimistically that they haven’t received a definitive rejection yet.

The writer behind some of the Batman movies has been suggesting a story for Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, focusing on his life as a husband and father. He shared this idea on X (formerly Twitter) on July 30, 2025. As of today, Sony Pictures hasn’t responded to his suggestions, either publicly or officially.

As a huge Spider-Man fan, it’s still a bit of a bummer to think about Spider-Man 4 never happening. Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were all set to continue the story they’d started with the first three films, with a planned release in May 2011. But creative disagreements behind the scenes ultimately led Sony to scrap the project and start fresh. That’s how we ended up with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, starring Andrew Garfield, which, while good, felt like a different path for the character.

Following the huge success of the 2021 Spider-Man film featuring Tom Holland, along with appearances by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, director Sam Raimi has expressed interest in returning to that universe. In an April 28, 2022 interview with Moviepilot, he explained that experiencing the multiverse made him realize, like Doctor Strange, that anything is now possible, and he’s open to revisiting those characters and stories.

So, I was reading through the official ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ book, and it turns out Tobey Maguire is definitely open to playing Spider-Man again! He actually said so himself in there – he seems really eager to revisit the role, which is fantastic news for fans like me.

Tobey Maguire really enjoys the Spider-Man films and working with the team. He’d jump at any chance to be involved, whether it was just hanging out or participating in a new project – he can’t imagine saying no!

Kirsten Dunst, known for playing Mary-Jane Watson in the Spider-Man movies, has expressed interest in appearing in a potential Spider-Man 4. She mentioned on October 3, 2025, that she’d be excited to see her character and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man as parents, saying, “I think that would be a really interesting story – me and Tobey reprising our roles with kids.”

In a recent interview with GQ on October 9, 2025, Andrew Garfield confirmed that he and Tobey Maguire won’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday. While a fourth Spider-Man film starring Garfield isn’t currently planned, Sony and Marvel are releasing Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026.
