Sam Raimi’s Underappreciated Horror Comeback Is Leaving HBO Max (And It’s Not Streaming Anywhere Else)

Throughout his impressive 40+ year career, Sam Raimi has directed 16 films, but he truly shines when making horror movies. He started with the classic The Evil Dead in 1981 and most recently directed Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien. In total, he’s directed seven horror films, cementing his place as a hugely influential figure in the genre. After a nine-year detour to direct the original Spider-Man trilogy, Raimi returned to horror with a film that didn’t get enough attention and is soon leaving HBO Max.

If you’re an HBO Max subscriber and want to watch the 2009 horror film Drag Me to Hell, you need to stream it soon! Directed by Sam Raimi, who also co-wrote the script, it was his first horror movie in nearly a decade, following 2000’s The Gift. The film stars Alison Lohman as a loan officer who faces a terrifying curse after refusing an extension to an elderly woman’s mortgage. The woman retaliates by unleashing a demon that will haunt her for three days before pulling her into hell. Drag Me to Hell has been available on HBO Max for a while, but it’s leaving the service on March 31st.

Drag Me to Hell Was a Triumphant Return to Horror for Sam Raimi

Sam Raimi made a thrilling return to horror with Drag Me to Hell. The film recaptured the energy of his earlier, beloved movies like Evil Dead II, offering a fun and frightening experience filled with demonic scares and darkly comedic moments. Even though it has a slightly less graphic PG-13 rating, Drag Me to Hell is a truly effective horror film, boasting memorable scenes – like the intense séance and brutal attacks – impressive practical effects, and a consistently unsettling atmosphere. The movie’s wild, chaotic ride builds to a shocking and unforgettable ending, making it one of the best horror conclusions in recent years.

Despite often being overlooked, Drag Me to Hell is considered one of Sam Raimi’s best films. It received very positive reviews, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it his third-highest-rated movie overall and his best-rated horror film until Send Help also achieved a 92% score. While it wasn’t a huge hit in theaters, Drag Me to Hell has gained a dedicated fanbase and stands out as a strong horror movie from its time, though a sequel has never been made.

Where to Stream Drag Me to Hell After It Leaves HBO Max?

The horror movie Drag Me to Hell is being removed from HBO Max, and it’s currently unknown where it will be available to stream next. It’s not available on any other major streaming services right now, and announcements for April haven’t been made yet. Even if it disappears from streaming platforms, you’ll still be able to rent or buy it online.
