Sam Rami’s Spider-Man 4 Gets A Surprisingly Hopeful Progress Update

Spider-Man: No Way Home delighted fans by bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their versions of Peter Parker, giving them important roles in the movie’s climax. The film’s huge success led to renewed interest in seeing both actors star in their own Spider-Man sequels – both of which were cut short. While Garfield has suggested The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is unlikely, fans are still hoping Maguire will team up with director Sam Raimi for Spider-Man 4. Although nothing is official yet, a well-known figure in the superhero movie world is working to make it happen.

Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman Part II with Matt Reeves, is working to develop Spider-Man 4. He envisions a story where Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker juggles being Spider-Man with the challenges of fatherhood. In a recent Q&A on X (formerly Twitter), Tomlin shared a hopeful update, saying things are progressing slowly but surely. While he acknowledged the project depends on many factors outside of his control and might not happen at all, he confirmed he hasn’t received a definitive rejection yet.

It’s a long process with many factors outside of my control, but so far, so good – I haven’t received a rejection yet. It seems like slow and steady progress is the key.

Will Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 Ever Happen?

The recent experience with the proposed The Hunt for Ben Solo film shows that a good idea isn’t always enough to get a movie made. Projects still need final approval from studio leaders. Right now, the future of Spider-Man 4 depends on Sony. It’s unclear if they’ll want to restart an older Spider-Man series while Tom Holland is still playing the role. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to continue the story of Peter Parker, and Sony might prefer to focus on just one live-action Spider-Man instead of juggling multiple versions.

It’s good that Sony hasn’t dismissed Tom Holland’s idea for another Spider-Man movie, suggesting they’re seriously thinking about it. Whether Spider-Man 4 gets made might hinge on whether Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. There’s been talk for a while that Secret Wars will bring back beloved characters from older Marvel films, and some speculate this could even mean a team-up between Maguire and Hugh Jackman. Because No Way Home connected Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, any new Spider-Man 4 film would need to consider what happens to Maguire’s version of Peter Parker in Secret Wars.

If Sony believes they can make Spider-Man 4 work, they should definitely pursue it. Recent years have shown that bringing back beloved franchises can be very successful, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films were hugely popular and influential. Many fans would be excited to see Tobey Maguire reprise his role, especially if it allowed for a strong conclusion after the somewhat disappointing Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man consistently performs well at the box office, seemingly unaffected by trends in the superhero genre, suggesting a fourth film could be very profitable. Kirsten Dunst has even expressed interest in returning, envisioning a story that follows Peter and MJ as parents, which matches a hopeful outlook for the project.

Sony is likely wondering if they can make another Spider-Man movie alongside the DC Universe’s plans for Batman. They can look to DC Studios for a solution. James Gunn is allowing filmmakers to create standalone stories outside the main DC timeline—an ‘Elseworlds’ approach. This means The Batman Part II can exist even with a separate Batman film planned for the main DC Universe, as long as they aren’t released in the same year. If DC Studios continues with two Batman films, Sony could similarly release Spider-Man 4 in a year when there isn’t a DC Universe Spider-Man movie, avoiding confusion for most viewers.
