Sam Rockwell Says His Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die Monologue Took a Shocking Amount of Time to Learn (and Makes His White Lotus Scene Look Easy)

Sam Rockwell is receiving rave reviews for his new film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, which currently has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Rockwell shared that perfecting a particular monologue for the movie was surprisingly challenging, and he also discussed his work on The White Lotus.

When asked about how much he connected with his character, Sam Rockwell compared it to living the same day over and over, like in ‘Groundhog Day,’ saying it felt like performing a play eight nights a week. He explained that preparing for his monologue in ‘Good Luck’ took significantly longer – at least four months – compared to the few weeks he had to prepare for his monologue in ‘The White Lotus’. He described the process of learning the ‘Good Luck’ monologue as difficult but praised the script as beautiful.

What Can You Expect From Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die?

This comedy is playfully self-aware, poking fun at our tech obsession while also reflecting it back at us. It’s a wild combination of The Terminator and Groundhog Day, centering on a man who insists he’s from the future. He arrives at a classic Los Angeles diner and takes everyone hostage, hoping to find people to help him save the world. When asked about technology – a key theme of the film, considering his character’s need to disconnect – actor Sam Rockwell held up his phone and said, “Yeah, this thing right here. It’s too much. I really try to limit my texting when I’m out in public.”

Reviewers are enthusiastically praising the film. Jen Addams of Strong Female Antagonist notes that its playful style and over-the-top action balance out a potentially heavy-handed message, explaining that Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die isn’t anti-technology, but rather a reminder to hold onto our humanity. Justin Clark of Slant agrees, pointing out that the film’s straightforwardness actually makes its connection to the growing influence of AI even more disturbing, and highlights how much we’ve willingly sacrificed for convenience.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is currently playing in theaters.
