Samsung to drop Microsoft OneDrive on Galaxy phones — photo cloud backups are moving to a new service

Microsoft and Samsung began a collaboration in 2019 to include Microsoft apps on Samsung Galaxy phones. This continues today, with the newest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Flip 7 models coming with apps like Outlook, Office, Phone Link, and OneDrive already installed.

The collaboration also meant OneDrive became a central part of Samsung devices. It’s now the default place where photos taken with Samsung’s Gallery app are automatically saved. Samsung stopped using its own backup service and switched to Microsoft’s, and OneDrive has been handling photo backups on all Galaxy phones ever since.

Samsung is planning to stop supporting OneDrive on its devices, according to a new report from Android Authority. Evidence found within the latest version of Samsung’s One UI (version 8.5) suggests the company is ending its six-year partnership with Microsoft’s cloud storage service, including messages like “Sync with OneDrive ending soon.”

Samsung is moving away from OneDrive and plans to use its own cloud service, Samsung Cloud, for backups. While Samsung Cloud has been around for a while, Samsung now wants it to also store your photos. The Gallery app will no longer connect directly to OneDrive, but you can still back up your photos to OneDrive if you prefer by using the OneDrive app.

These days, most people don’t use OneDrive to back up their photos anymore. While it used to be a popular choice, services like Google Photos and iCloud have gotten much better, and many users simply stick with the photo backup app that already comes with their phone.

I still see OneDrive being useful, especially as a way to back up your files and documents in the cloud. I find it’s a good option for photos too, but I like to use it *along with* the automatic backup that already comes with my phone. That setup has been working really well for me.
