Samuel L. Jackson & Matthew McConaughey Teamed Up in This $155M Movie That’s Now a Netflix Hit, 29 Years Later

Netflix subscribers have had a lot to enjoy this November! Beyond the highly anticipated first episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 arriving later in the month, November brought a wave of new holiday movies like A Very Vintage Christmas, alongside beloved classics such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dr. Dolittle, Back to the Future, and Baby Driver. The critically acclaimed 2019 courtroom drama Just Mercy, starring Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson, was also added. We’ll be taking a closer look at that mix of newer and classic titles today.

Joel Schumacher’s A Time to Kill is a classic 1990s courtroom drama packed with stars. It features powerhouse performances from Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey – known more recently for True Detective – and Sandra Bullock, who also starred in the 2007 Netflix thriller Premonition.

What Is A Time to Kill About?

In the film A Time to Kill, lawyer Jake Brigance (Matthew McConaughey) is approached by Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson) after his ten-year-old daughter is brutally attacked by two white men (Doug Hutchison and Nicky Katt). When Brigance realizes the attackers will likely avoid punishment, Hailey takes the law into his own hands and kills them both.

Jake Brigance agrees to defend Carl Lee Hailey, but the case is immediately filled with obstacles. He struggles to get the trial moved away from Canton, Mississippi, fearing an unfair, all-white jury. As the trial nears, various Ku Klux Klan groups flood the town, causing chaos and endangering everyone involved in the defense.

Despite dealing with important issues of race and aiming high, many critics found A Time to Kill to be a fairly standard and predictable courtroom drama. Still, Samuel L. Jackson’s powerful performance makes it worthwhile, and the movie boasts an incredibly strong cast from the 1990s. In addition to Jackson, Sandra Bullock, and Matthew McConaughey, the film features Ashley Judd, Octavia Spencer, M. Emmet Walsh, Anthony Heald (known from The Silence of the Lambs), Chris Cooper, Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt.

I was checking out the global streaming charts, and it was great to see A Time to Kill land at number six for the week of November 10th to 16th, 2025! Apparently, 5.4 million people worldwide tuned in to watch Joel Schumacher’s classic courtroom drama that week, which is fantastic.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein adaptation led the pack with 33.8 million viewers. Several other titles performed better than A Time to Kill, including A Merry Little Ex-Mas, the popular series KPop Demon Hunters (currently enjoying a 22-week run), In Your Dreams, and Being Eddie. Behind the courtroom drama were The Little Things, featuring Denzel Washington, the action film The Marksman starring Liam Neeson, and Shrek Forever After, which has remained popular for five weeks.
