Tomorrow Studios, the team behind the popular live-action One Piece on Netflix, is creating a live-action version of another well-loved anime: Samurai Champloo. This announcement comes before the premiere of One Piece Season 2, which follows the successful first season.
Prior to working on One Piece, Tomorrow Studios attempted to create a live-action version of Cowboy Bebop, another acclaimed anime by Watanabe. However, that show received negative feedback from fans and was cancelled by Netflix after just one season. Tomorrow Studios has stated that Watanabe will have a greater creative role in their upcoming Samurai Champloo adaptation compared to his involvement with Cowboy Bebop.
According to Tomorrow Studios co-founder Marty Adelstein, it’s crucial to have the original creator involved in any adaptation to ensure it stays true to their vision. In the case of the live-action One Piece series, creator Eiichiro Oda is a producer and is heavily involved in the making of the show.
Becky Clements, co-founder of Tomorrow Studios, explained that during a dinner with [Watanabe] in Japan, they expressed their strong desire for him to be involved creatively if they decided to move ahead with Samurai Champloo. They were very happy he agreed.
Live-Action Samurai Champloo Can Atone for Cowboy Bebop’s Failure
First airing in 2004, Samurai Champloo hasn’t reached the widespread popularity of Cowboy Bebop, but it has a dedicated fanbase, particularly among American viewers who discovered it on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block.
Samurai Champloo is an exciting anime adventure taking place in historical Japan. It centers around three unlikely companions – Jin, a stoic and skilled samurai; Mugen, a rebellious and passionate swordsman; and Fuu, a determined young woman – as they travel across the country in search of a mysterious samurai who carries the scent of sunflowers. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and learn more about each other’s hidden histories.
Beyond its great characters and impressive animation from studio Manglobe, Samurai Champloo was unique because of how director Shinichirō Watanabe blended hip-hop music and culture into a traditional samurai setting. Watanabe is well-known for his use of music, and this show features tracks from artists like Shakkazombie, Fat Jon, Nujabes, and Force of Nature.
