After more than two decades, a new story in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Gellar is famous for her role as Buffy Summers, which she played for seven seasons – balancing the challenges of fighting vampires and demons with the everyday struggles of a teenager. The new series, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, wasn’t meant to be a complete restart or a direct sequel, but rather a continuation of Buffy’s adventures, set in a world where she hasn’t been seen for a long time. Gellar is also known for roles in I Know What You Did Last Summer and the live-action Scooby-Doo movies, but Buffy remains her most recognizable part.
I was honestly surprised when Joss Whedon said she was coming back to Buffy! She’d been hesitant, but promised she’d stay true to what we all loved about the original. And she really did – Buffy paved the way for so many shows like Supernatural, True Blood, and even The Umbrella Academy. But even with her working with someone as talented as Chloé Zhao, I have to say… the news about where the show is headed now is really disappointing. I don’t think fans are going to be thrilled.
Sarah Michelle Gellar shared on Instagram that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, Buffy: New Sunnydale, has been cancelled by Hulu. She expressed her disappointment, thanking director Chloé Zhao for the opportunity to revisit the role of Buffy and remembering how much she enjoys playing her. While acknowledging the show won’t be moving forward, Gellar playfully offered fans a bit of hope, saying, “if the apocalypse actually comes…you can still beep me.”
I’m really disappointed to share this news, but I wanted you to hear it directly from me. Hulu has decided not to proceed with the ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ series. I want to thank Chloé Zhao for the opportunity – I never imagined I’d be revisiting the world of Buffy, and working with her reminded me how much I love the character and how much she means to all of us. This decision doesn’t change any of that, and I promise, if the world really does end, you can still count on me!
More to come…
