As a longtime fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar and the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement as we gear up for the upcoming sequel. Having grown up watching SMG grace our screens with her incredible acting skills, it’s fascinating to see her evolve from the terrified Helen Shivers in the ’97 original to an unofficial behind-the-scenes advisor on this new project.
Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a picture from the filming of the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” follow-up on Instagram last Wednesday, playfully teasing that “Scooby-Doo 3” will be out next.
The image didn’t provide many details, but it did expose the back of a collapsible chair bearing the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” emblem. Apart from that, it was merely a snapshot of the interior of a black tent filled with filming gear. As of now, we don’t have confirmation that Gellar is involved in the delayed sequel. However, she is married to the star Freddie Prinze Jr. and maintains friendly relations with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Gellar played a significant role in the 1997 movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” where unfortunately, her character Helen Shivers didn’t make it to the end. In a chat with PEOPLE, she clarified that she won’t be returning as her deceased character. However, she mentioned that she plans to be present on set and contribute to the production informally due to her strong bond with the cast and crew. (Note: Spoiler alert for those who haven’t watched the movie.)
As a follower, I find myself in the unique position of having an informal role during our film production. Since my best friend [Robinson] is at the helm, we often joke about it. In essence, I serve as the continuity person, ensuring consistency across scenes. So, when she’s uncertain about a particular sequence or action, I step in to offer suggestions like, “That seems plausible given the characters,” or “I don’t think that would happen with these characters.” In a way, I can say I have an unofficial job title, but it’s all part of our creative process.

Originally, the story in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was penned as a book by Lois Duncan. The 1997 film spawned a sequel titled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” the following year, and another direct-to-video sequel in 2006 called “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer”. In 2021, Prime Video premiered a television series remake featuring a fresh group of teenage characters. The upcoming movie will bring back Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the two actors whose characters have managed to survive their ordeals thus far.
The upcoming movie, set to premiere on July 18, 2025, was penned by Jeff Howard, Sam Lansky, Leah McKendrick, and Robinson. Notably, Neal H. Moritz, the original producer, is back for this production. Among the stars we can expect are Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette. In case you’re eager to revisit the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” it is currently streaming on Peacock in the U.S.
