Sarah Michelle Gellar Shares One Marriage Rule With Freddie Prinze Jr.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is flushed with ideas for a long and healthy relationship. 

After 23 years of marriage, Star Search judge and her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., credit one key rule for their lasting relationship.

Sarah shared with Erin Lim Rhodes of TopMob News’ The Rundown at the premiere of the new Netflix competition series on January 20th that her key to a successful relationship is having separate bathrooms. She stated simply, “That’s what I always say.”

Chrissy Teigen, a fellow judge on Star Search who attended the event with her, completely agreed. She shared that she and her husband, John Legend, have the same approach.

Chrissy explained that it’s the small details that matter, and you have to maintain a sense of allure and attractiveness in subtle ways.

The woman, who is 40, confessed that although her husband doesn’t do this often, she always makes an effort to. She joked, “He thinks I’ve never passed gas or used the bathroom.”

They have these two amazing kids, Charlotte who’s 16, and Rocky who’s 13, and honestly, I admire them so much because they’ve always kept their relationship super private. Freddie even said they pretty much ignore anyone who tries to tell them what to do – like they just do their own thing, and it’s perfect! They’ve been together forever, and it’s so inspiring to see them just…be them.

He told TopMob News in July that he’d never received helpful advice. A lot of the marriage advice he got came from divorced men who expected his marriage to fail as well, and he believes they were projecting their own problems onto him.

The 49-year-old compared giving advice to peanut butter, saying just because he thinks it’s helpful doesn’t mean it will be for everyone—in fact, it could even be harmful. He explained that what works for one person might not work for another, and could even have negative consequences.

He added that it doesn’t always work out as planned, and he’s received plenty of unhelpful advice about marriage.

They’ve also made an effort to live private lives, steering clear of the usual Hollywood excess. Freddie feels celebrities can manage their public image and personal lives “to a certain extent.”

He said on the Oldish podcast in 2024 that he wasn’t sure if others were intentionally avoiding something unpleasant, but he knew it was easy for him to stay out of it because he rarely leaves home.

Freddie explained that Sarah and he tend to avoid the paparazzi by choosing restaurants that aren’t popular hotspots. ‘We stick to places we enjoy, and they’re usually off the radar,’ he said.
