Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Return Makes Her the Replacement for One OG Character

The reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return as Buffy Summers, albeit in a new role compared to her original one. Almost two decades since the series ended, it was announced that “Buffy” is making a comeback, with Hulu ordering a pilot episode. While there’s no certainty that the show will ultimately be greenlit for a full series, Gellar’s involvement, a solid creative team, and Disney’s opportunity to reintroduce another well-known intellectual property increase its chances significantly.

I’m excited to work alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar as we embark on this new venture together. The young cast will be spearheaded by a fresh Slayer, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who is said to portray the character named Nova. Kingston Vernes is rumored to take on the role of her love interest in the series. There are whispers that we might revisit Sunnydale, but beyond Gellar, it’s uncertain which aspects from the original series will make a comeback. It remains to be seen whether some other cast members will return, but it seems Buffy herself is stepping into a role once held by someone else.

Buffy Summers Can Be The New Giles In The Reboot

The upcoming show, given its main characters and plot details, seems to center around a new Slayer named Nova. This aligns with Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s inherent narrative structure as a generational story. With a younger cast, the show offers a fresh perspective on the Scooby Gang. If this is the case, it implies that Buffy will be similar to Nova’s Watcher, while the revamped version of Rupert Giles could be represented in the new show.

In the early seasons of Buffy, the relationship between The Watcher and The Slayer played a significant role, not only shaping Buffy as a vampire slayer but also as an individual. Giles served as both a mentor and a father figure to her. As the series progressed into Season 7, Buffy herself took on a similar role for the new Slayer. This development makes sense since she was already training all of the Potentials at that point. However, it remains to be seen how all these potential Slayers will affect the reboot of the show. This is a natural progression of events in the storyline.

The Council of Watchers was once annihilated, and resurrecting it could be overly complex and perhaps even redundant. Instead, it makes more sense for Buffy to take on its responsibilities, although not in an official “Watcher” capacity, as a means to incorporate Sarah Michelle Gellar into the reboot.

Buffy’s Role Will Be Unique For The Franchise

Buffy was responsible for training the Potentials, which sets her apart in the series with a distinct character arc. In the world of Slayers, it’s unusual to have an older Slayer train others, as it defies the traditional order of things. Usually, Slayers don’t survive long enough or coexist due to Willow’s spell granting power only coming into play later. However, in Buffy’s timeline, there were only two instances where other Slayers lived, and they were roughly around the same age as her, not significantly more or less experienced.

The new version of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series might create an intriguing relationship between Buffy and Nova, offering a blend of novelty and nostalgia. Achieving this balance will be essential for the reboot – it needs to modernize enough for new viewers while still retaining the essence of the original. This partnership could also offer insight into Buffy’s evolution, showcasing both her growth and continuity. The dynamic might bring humor, emotion, and poignancy, especially as it delves into Buffy confronting her past and current responsibilities.

Giles Himself Will Hopefully Still Return For Buffy’s Revival

It’s possible that Buffy might assume a role similar to Giles, and it’s becoming apparent that Sarah Michelle Gellar is now older than Anthony Head was when “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” initially aired. Let’s hope that the reboot will offer an opportunity for Ripper to make an appearance. Although he had a lesser role in the last two seasons, he was still incredibly significant, offering the necessary support and guidance for Buffy, which she might still require in the future.

In the upcoming reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” only Gellar is confirmed as returning so far. However, other original actors or characters might join in. Given the generational theme of the series, bringing back Head’s character Giles seems fitting, especially since Buffy often seeks his advice and guidance, including on her role as a teacher for the new Slayer. His absence would leave a noticeable gap in the storyline.
