Sony Interactive Entertainment and Housemarque have announced that *Saros* will be available on PlayStation 5 starting March 20, 2026.
Here is an overview of the game, via Sony Interactive Entertainment:
This is a dream project, by a dream team. Please watch our gameplay first look below:
This gameplay footage was recorded on PlayStation 5 at 60 frames per second using Unreal Engine 5. Keep in mind that the game, *Saros*, is still under development, so you can expect changes, improvements, and bug fixes when it releases on PlayStation 5, and will be further enhanced on PlayStation 5 Pro in 2026.
In this extended gameplay showcase, we aimed to introduce the game’s world and story before diving into the core 3rd-person action and demonstrating how Saros elevates the experience.
The Shape-Shifting Planet of Carcosa
Okay, so I’m getting a first look at *Saros*, and it’s seriously cool. You play as Arjun Devraj (played by Rahul Kohli) on this planet called Carcosa, and it’s *weird*. The planet actually changes every time you die – totally reshapes itself! That means tons of different environments and enemies to fight. I’m watching Arjun explore as a massive eclipse is coming, and he runs into Nitya Chandran (Shunori Ramanthan), who seems like a really important character. The place he’s exploring is this lost city, powered by some messed-up energy from the eclipse. And get this – that’s just *one* of the areas the team is building for the game! It looks stunning.
How Our Action Gameplay Has Evolved
We wanted to give you a first look at actual gameplay from *Saros*, showing unedited action. We’ll then break down the new features we’ve built on top of *Returnal*’s critically acclaimed third-person gameplay. Our main goal with these additions is to make the gameplay more complex and offer players a greater range of options.
Arjun wears a powerful Soltari combat suit that lets him move quickly, jump, and fight in close combat. Before each attempt, you’ll choose your weapons, mixing human Soltari technology with alien Carcosan gear. In this gameplay video, Arjun uses the Soltari Phosphorous Shotgun to fight off enemy robots within a long-lost city. You can expect intense battles with unique enemy attacks and satisfyingly powerful weapons, creating an exciting science-fiction experience.
Weaponry and Abilities
Arjun has two special abilities. First, the Soltari Shield, activated by pressing and holding the R1 button, lets you run into enemy attacks in *Saros* and absorb their energy for defense. You can then unleash this absorbed energy with your Carcosan Power Weapon. This weapon’s second ability allows you to charge it up by fully pressing the L2 adaptive trigger after absorbing energy, and then fire a powerful blast at enemies using the R2 button.
Power Weapons allow Arjun to turn his right arm into a powerful, energy-based weapon, but this transformation corrupts him. This provides a new and customizable method for inflicting massive damage to enemies.
Storytelling in Carcosa
We’re excited to share how we’re enriching the story in *Saros*. Beyond realistic voiceovers, beautiful cutscenes, eerie audio logs, and conversations with the characters you meet, you’ll discover Soltari Holograms that reveal the history of Carcosa as you explore. Collecting these holograms is key to understanding what happened on this dangerous planet. We’ve also added more dreamlike and mysterious story sequences, and we’ll share more details about those soon.
Finally, let’s talk about Arjun’s “Second Chance” ability. Once unlocked, if Arjun dies, he can use eclipse energy to revive once. This is just one piece of Saros’s permanent progression system, designed to ensure you always return stronger after falling in battle. You can also upgrade your Soltari combat suit and abilities to further enhance your power after each death.
We’re incredibly excited about how *Saros* is coming along and can’t wait for everyone to play it! It’s been a collaborative effort from a fantastic team, and we want to thank our amazing partners at PlayStation Studios, including XDEV, Nixxes, and the Creative Arts teams, as well as many others who helped bring it to life.
Nixxes is collaborating closely with the talented team at Housemarque – including their creative and production leads – on the art and gameplay for Saros. They’ve been fantastic partners, and this first look at gameplay showcases their incredible work.
Following the success of Returnal, PlayStation Studios Creative Arts is once again partnering with Housemarque. The audio and music featured in this reveal showcase this ongoing collaboration, and we’re creating something truly special together.
The game’s dark and atmospheric music, which you heard in both this gameplay reveal and our previous cinematic trailer, was created by the incredibly talented Sam Slater. He’s a two-time Grammy Award winner who’s known for his work on popular projects like Chernobyl and Joker, and he also contributed to the music for the critically acclaimed film, Mandy.
As we approach the launch, we’ll be sharing a detailed look at the music and how Sam created it. Our goal was to develop a truly original and groundbreaking score, unlike anything you’ve heard before.
We’ll soon be revealing more details about our captivating story, including what happens in the plot, who you’ll meet among the characters, and the secrets of the lost colony on Carcosa that you’ll explore.
