Saw Series Producer Reveals First Details of Scrapped Saw X Sequel (Exclusive)

The upcoming “Saw” movie featuring Tobin Bell’s John Kramer, initially scheduled for release by Lionsgate on various dates between September 2024 and 2025, has been canceled entirely after reports declared it as dead. However, in June, horror powerhouse Blumhouse acquired a portion of the “Saw” rights from co-founders and longtime producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg of Twisted Pictures.

Following the reveal by “Saw IX” co-writer Patrick Melton that creative disagreements between producers and Lionsgate led to the sequel’s halt, Koules admits that he and Burg had some differences in vision that prevented them from aligning their ideas.

Mark and I had a disagreement regarding our views on ‘Saw 11’, as the Saw franchise producer confided to ComicBook during an interview for their coverage of the Sophie Turner-starring thriller, ‘Trust’. It’s truly unfortunate.

Kevin Gruetert, who directed the well-received ‘Saw VI’ and ‘Saw X’ (the only ‘Saw’ movie to receive positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes), was previously slated to direct ‘Saw XI’ and jointly wrote the script with long-time franchise contributors James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Marcus Dunstan (responsible for ‘Saw IV’, ‘Saw V’, ‘Saw VI’, and ‘Saw 3D’).

Koules disclosed that Synnøve [Macody Lund, the actress who portrayed Cecilia Pederson in ‘Saw X’] was among those returning following the events of ‘Saw X’. He finds her remarkable. The plot we developed was set to unfold just thirty seconds after ‘Saw X’ concluded.

In the timeline between the original Saw film from 2004 and its sequel Saw II in 2005, a story unfolds. This tale revolves around a character named Kramer, who is afflicted with cancer and goes to Mexico seeking treatment. However, when Cecilia’s life-saving Pederson Project is exposed as a fraud, the terminally ill Jigsaw Killer retaliates, setting up lethal traps for Cecilia and her accomplices. The film concludes with con artist Cecilia struggling for breath in Kramer’s gas chamber alongside fellow swindler Parker Sears, portrayed by Steven Brand.

After the movie’s final credits, Kramer’s apprentice, Mark Hoffman (played by Costas Mandylor), is reappeared. However, an additional scene hinted at Cecilia escaping from Kramer’s trap, which seems to foreshadow events in XI.

Koules laments the cancellation of Saw XI, stating that they disagreed on certain aspects and were unable to reach an agreement.

In simpler terms, Melton had earlier referred to the plot of ‘Saw X’ as a “relevant narrative,” suggesting that it would extend the character Kramer’s mission against fraudulent scammers and insurance companies.

In the statement, Koules expressed his thoughts on transferring Saw to Blumhouse by saying, “Given the success of the tenth movie, it seemed like the perfect moment to hand over the torch. I’m extremely proud of what we accomplished with Lionsgate over the past two decades and immensely grateful to the fans who have been with us since day one. It’s particularly significant for me to observe the series returning to its original makers, James and Leigh, and I can’t imagine a more suitable figure than Jason [Blum] to guide Saw into its upcoming phase.

In his personal statement, Burg expressed that with the unfortunate demise of Jason Constantine, the executive producer of the Saw series, he feels it’s now time for him to explore new narrative paths. He emphasized that Saw will forever hold a significant place in both his own and Hollywood’s history. Burg also expressed his hope that the character Jigsaw and the Saw universe continue to inspire and captivate audiences in future films for years to come.

The movie titled “Trust,” produced by Koules, features Sophie Turner and is helmed by director Carlson Young from “Upgraded.” It hits theaters on August 22.
