With the announcement of a merger between HBO Max and Paramount+, a new era in streaming is beginning this month, marked by significant changes in the industry.
BET+ will officially become part of Paramount+ in June. The streaming service, which launched seven years ago and was run by Tyler Perry Studios, has been owned by Paramount Skydance since they acquired Viacom. This means all of BET+’s content will now be available directly on Paramount+.
Paramount+ Is Taking Over BET+
Paramount+ is absorbing BET+ as BET+ ceases operations, and as part of this, Paramount has also purchased Tyler Perry’s share in the company. While the financial details haven’t been revealed, Perry’s recent agreement with BET Media Group, signed in 2024 and worth a substantial nine-figure sum, runs through 2028 and will now be managed under Paramount+.
BET+ started in September 2019, shortly before the companies that owned BET – Viacom and CBS – combined to become Paramount Global. It costs $5.99 a month with advertisements, or $9.99 a month without. While it’s unknown if the price will change, Paramount+ is adding a dedicated BET section to the service.
In March, Paramount announced it had fully acquired Tyler Perry Studios’ ownership share in BET+. The company stated they are aligned with Perry’s goal of growing the audience for BET content, and he will remain a key creative partner through his existing deal to produce programs.
BET President Louis Carr announced in a memo that BET+ content will move to Paramount+ beginning in June.
What Is Changing for BET+?
Following Scott Mills’ departure as CEO in December 2025, Carr recently became the head of BET+. In a recent message, Carr explained that this change will allow BET+ to expand its reach and further support the stories, creators, and culture it represents.
The memo emphasized that the new streaming service will offer over 1,000 hours of popular shows, movies, original content, and culturally significant programs that showcase the diversity of the Black experience. This includes well-known titles like THE MS. PAT SHOW, ALL THE QUEEN’S MEN, ZATIMA, AVERAGE JOE, and DIARRA FROM DETROIT.
Carr enthusiastically announced the update, emphasizing that well-known Black stories will be easily recognizable, highlighted, and accessible within the BET Hub.
Carr explained that BET’s traditional TV channel will still be a major part of what they do, and BET Studios is continuing to create the high-quality, original content that represents the brand. BET Digital will also remain key to their overall strategy, focusing on engaging with audiences online, sparking conversations, and growing their reach on social media and new platforms.
BET+ started before Paramount+. BET+ debuted on September 19, 2019, while Paramount+ officially launched on March 4, 2021.
HBO Max launched on May 27, 2020, making it an older streaming service compared to Paramount’s.
